The toolbox is full of bad models

This post was originally posted in Building Support and was duplicated as a formal bug report to comply with Roblox staff @Hooksmith’s requests. However, a different staff member – @riddlemasta – decide to further waste my time by telling me to post it here instead, so that’s what I’m doing  I’m also not sure how begging for engineers to fix something that is broken is a “feature request” but I know trying to argue or reason with Roblox staff is futile.

“Hello Developers,
I want to tell you about a bug I encountered recently and I don’t know how to fix it.
I completely restarted my windows and all my files were deleted. The first time I installed Roblox and Roblox studio. I entered the Roblox studio to log in because I wanted to make a new game and I quickly looked at the toolbox to find some inspiration. Guess what I saw? The whole toolbox was full of models that had few votes and the main page did not have the models verified by the admins. If you know how I can get rid of this problem, please help me!”

Edit:
There’s another post a user made about the same problem

Did you leave “Include Un-Verified Creators” on?

this post is essentially just for roblox staff. solutions like these have been tried and exhausted (this is the third duplication of this post, for reference). this isn’t a problem that can be fixed with advice; it requires the attention of the engineers and any other powers that be

I don’t see anything wrong here

Basically they are stating that everything in the toolbox is junk models on their end. If you were to pull up toolbox you will see a ton of models with high like ratings in this case they are not seeing that and are seeing 0 votes or very low. Could be an issue on their end though.

This honestly seems like user error. The screenshots you posted like one of the staff mentioned in your other post are from 2021. They’ve made improvements to the toolbox since then adding better filtering techniques as well the ability to search by the design of the building. If you typed “Red house” you’ll get results of a bunch of red houses even if it wasn’t apart of the models name.

Another thing is verified creators, that option is enabled by default and you have to turn it off to see assets made by non-verified creators. If your looking for high quality assets for free in the toolbox unfortunately you won’t find many cause a lot of decent assets are paid which hasn’t been added yet to the toolbox (will be soon though).

If you are still having issues with the toolbox why not use more updated pictures with a more accurate issue rather than the same text and pictures you got 4 years ago?

Goodness nice catch of seeing it’s 2021. Lol but honestly the search is fine for me, atleast for (SFX) which is all i need. If the OP can provide newer recent screenshots that would be amazing

personally, i see plenty of high-ranking models. but the issue is the toolbox being littered with a lot of models that don’t work. so much so, that i have great difficulty finding anything that works at all. half the time, i come up unsuccessful and have to do without.

the other issue is difficulty finding specific models. usually copies of what ur looking for is the best you’ll find, while the original model is still available but just not appearing for whatever reason

when i was a kid, i could reach my hand into the toolbox and pull out models that worked, and it wasn’t very hard to find models that functioned. it’s no longer this way, and as time goes on, the less i can rely on the toolbox to help me make games

-and this post might be from 2021, but there’s a lot of old problems that are still prevalent on the platform, and this is just one amongst them

Yeah but back in 2010 there weren’t as many developers to fill up the toolbox. In 2025 there’s average I believe 50 new accounts being created every second. When you start adding new items to the marketplace or the toolbox it’s hard to manage.

They’ve added unique name searching so rather than searching by a specific keyword you can wrap the search in quotes to have it match that text.

With the toolbox being open to everyone theirs a lot of assets that get uploaded to it more being bad than good but that’s just how it is.

For every good model theirs 3 bad ones. Have you ever went to a restaurant and had a poor experience? Did you ask to speak with a manager due to that experience? Often times it’s the opposite if you had a good experience, the manager wouldn’t hear any of the good experiences they had with their server only the bad.

To reiterate this most of the models you see on the toolbox are bad but that doesn’t mean the toolbox is trash. We complain about AI doing a lot of roblox’s work but what if your model was good but got reported to be poor quality by the AI that reviewed it? Roblox definitely isn’t going to have a team inspect each item by hand to review its quality that’s just a waste of resources.

I apologize if some of this doesn’t make sense I tried to remain neutral but still have some logic to stand behind.

i get ur point but at the end of the day, i don’t believe in tolerating the problem. there’s a problem at hand, and it’s only getting worse. if we don’t fix it, the consequence is that someday the toolbox might be rendered useless due to the abundance of bad models. we should fix it

i’m not the one to deliver solutions to this problem either; i ain’t no engineer. i question why i’m even being reasoned with lol. i feel like reasoning with me is really irrelevant to the problem at hand, since i ain’t the problem, the toolbox is

Edit: i’m still treating this like a bug report. if this was actually a feature request, i would be open-minded as to how to improve on an idea, but there’s no idea being presented here, only a problem is. this was only posted in this side of the forum because @riddlemasta told me to

My toolbox seems to be fine could you possibly upload a picture of how your toolbox looks when searching house and tire?

Hey, thanks for posting and sorry for all the bouncing around. You’re right, posting 3 times isn’t a great experience, sorry you had to do that.

Why make it a feature request
We consider bugs regressions from previous behavior that was working, while feature requests are requests to add things that we haven’t supported before. Internally, we have different processes for feature requests vs bug reports. The search system is better than it was in the past during those screenshots, so we don’t consider this a regression. I should’ve just posted the feature request for you or moved it ourselves, sorry about that.

I think there are a couple problems here so I want to tease them apart:
1. Search relevancy
I think the problem of relevant results has gotten better since the original screenshot. If you see other search issues, please give us examples so we can look into them!

2. Model functionality
@Voleraii noted in the other thread that some models from Toolbox don’t work when inserted. I should’ve given you more info originally: we actually looked into this and I wrote a spec for what a solution would look like. The issue was that to do this the right way (ensuring all scripts work), it’s a challenging technical problem that would require a large effort across several teams. We’re exploring other solutions that could be good enough for this use case.

thank you for this response and i appreciate you laying out the issues in a more structured way.

a problem i bring up a lot in these posts is that a lot of models i pull out no longer work. a solution you offer is for Roblox to have a way to detect if scripts work or not. this sounds like the most realsitic and most popular solution, but the reason why many of these models don’t work anymore is because of updates Roblox has made over the years that have killed how a lot of old scripts work. if Roblox hadn’t changed the things they had, these models and their scripts would all work fine and dandy. with that being said, perhaps not ruining current functions whenever an upgrade is wanting to be made is a better long-term solution. introducing new upgrades while leaving old functions in-tact would mean that even old models from the early days of roblox would still work. if you want some examples, consider checking out a lot of the Gear on the catalogue/marketplace. the All-Seeing Sentry gear doesn’t work properly anymore since it runs on old scripts. A lot of the vehicles in the 2010 Starterplace no longer work properly because of Roblox “upgrades” from over the years. Everything mentioned worked perfectly fine at one point, and is now only broken because of updates. The same updates that broke these gears are the same exact updates that killed many old toolbox models

As a Programmer, they should deprecate and DELETE these functions you mention. Some of these functions have vulnerabilities that can be exploited. What came before MarketPlaceService i was think it was GamepassService had an exploit where you can manipulate the game into thinking you owned the gamepass.

As for Roblox to detect the scripts if they work, the only way I can see them going about it is checking if it has any deprecated or deleted Functions / Instances which can increase loading times of the model I believe? They are more big brain than me so they have a better solution?

Roblox is here to evolve and make game developing on their platform more strong, and performant. Keeping those deprecated / deleted functions in their platform will only cause confusion as you will see bad practices as a new developer. It’s just my opinion though. If you’re looking for something in the tool box / script. Most of the time AI can do it for you or even Roblox’s AI assistant.
