Before You Begin

Make sure your system meets the following requirements:

Sober System Requirements (based on Roblox mobile requirements):

Hardware:

• CPU: x86-64 with SSE4.2 support
  → Check CPU compatibility
• Graphics: Vulkan 1.0+ or OpenGL ES 3.0+
• Kernel: Linux 5.11 or newer

Installing Roblox (Client)

After installing Sober, open the app from your desktop menu. On first launch, you’ll be prompted to install Roblox automatically.

If you want more control, you can install Roblox manually. Here’s how:

1. Go to APKMirror - Roblox

2. Click the button that looks like this:

5. Finally, click DOWNLOAD APK BUNDLE and wait for the file to download.

6. Open Sober, select the .apkm file, and Roblox will launch!

Configuring Sober (Optional)

Sober’s behavior can be customized by editing its config file:

Here are some useful options:

Installing Roblox Studio

1. Open Vinegar
2. Click on Install Studio and wait for Roblox Studio to install.

• You can install dependencies first by clicking on Initialize Data before installing Studio.

3. Run Studio using icon on app menu or from vinegar.

Tips

• You can also modify Roblox Studio Fast Flags and many other things by opening the manage window from the right-click menu.
• If studio stops working or becomes unresponsive, you can kill it by clicking stop studio from vinegar menu/app.

1. Configure vinegar by clicking on the Manage button at the context menu that appears when you right click Vinegars icon.

Known Bugs/ Issues

Unfortunately, these methods come with a few bugs and issues:

• Highlights appear pixelated when using Sober.
• Docks bug a lot in Studio.
• Panels can’t be docked in studio. (To fix this open wine config from vinegar menu then check Desktop Integration > Enable virtual desktop)
• Everything is flickery in studio, however this can be fixed by changes GPU settings.
• Studio is often detected as “unresponsive” as a result of false positives and automatically killed which is very annoying. (it’s going to be fixed next release!)

Why is there no Official Support for Linux?

Why can't there be official support for Linux?

Mostly money. But I can think of a few reasons.

1. Why spend money supporting Linux when it has such a small market share in desktop OS, and to support the fact that Linux may be a bit too unappealing to many kids and gamers. I doubt that Roblox would want to spend money on it.

2. This may be a stretch, but botting is pretty easy to automate on Linux compared to Windows, so it would be more beneficial for exploiters and account sellers to make money off them, due to Windows, many hurdles in doing this.

3. Due to not knowing the underlying code of Roblox itself, I don’t know if it can support X11 or Wayland natively, nor do I believe they want to, as Wayland is relatively new and X11 is less contributed to, along with internal drama.

The only way Roblox would want to support Linux is if they make money from it at the end of the day. Because Roblox is a publicly traded company, it can depend on major investors. I am fortunate enough to have a good enough system to run VM Roblox or dual-boot Windows.

If you would like to do your programming on Linux, Rojo and Luau lsp is available on my distribution, NixOS. And I believe it can be installed on npm or the AUR. After just connecting it with Rojo to a VM or another machine.

We have stated multiple times: Hyperion, with all features enabled, does not work on Wine. The reason is that Hyperion uses quite a few tricks that simply don’t work on Wine because those undocumented features are, well, not documented and therefore not implemented. This means one effectively has two choices:

1.) Use conditional checks to disable certain code paths if running on Wine, or
2.) Remove those features altogether so there is no need for conditional checks.

Back then, as we enabled support for Wine (unofficial, as it was an effort of our team in their free time), we chose option one. Soon after, reports surfaced that Wine was being used for cheating. This forced us to remove conditional checks and fully enable all features of Hyperion (conditions are easier to find and NOP out).

This left us between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, questions were raised in-house why we enabled it in the first place (and subsequently removed it); on the other hand, the community was upset because we took a “perfectly good” feature away. This shows once again that no good deed goes unpunished.

So much for the history of Hyperion on Wine. As I read through all the posts in this thread, I’m wondering, though, where this idea comes from that we just make up stories to justify hurting the community. This way of thinking is really hard to understand, mainly because a Roblox dev can’t just make up stuff without serious repercussions from leadership, nor would it make any sense to go through the extra effort when we don’t have to, as, at least we devs, have the option to just stay silent, which perhaps I should take more often

We should stop criticizing Roblox staff, as it was not their decision to kill wine support, but rather the company’s. They were the ones to enable it.

Roblox is really trying hard banning Linux users, so I checked Vinegar’s Discord server.

Sober should be fine:

Per K1yrix:

1. (applicable for auto download) we use apks straight from google play’s cdns, so nothing is modified from here
2. apk signatures are checked, so we can assure that it’s the real deal
3. and the signature verification is very strict since we don’t want bs being installed for malicious reasons

Since Roblox studio’s new update, it gives the following error massage:

Wine also takes a little bit memory to RUN studio that’s why it has bad performance. For sober, its fine.

I am on Ubuntu 22.04, I’ve created symlinks and verified that wine and wine64 do exist in the /files/bin folder

reason I ask here is because I can’t find anything online about it
