TriTerrain, A Triangle Terrain Generator

TriTerrain Generator

Install Plugin

“Create triangle terrain scenery with ease!”

I present to you a plugin that allows you to create Triangle Terrain very easily!

Features

  • Generate Triangle terrain

Freely build triangle terrain from a set of points, which means you can make it as big or as small as you like!

  • Built in Bad Triangle detection

Automatically detects oddly generated triangles and lets you know. Though this can be just a false positive, but better than not knowing!

  • Straight-forward Guidance

The workflow is very straight forward, very hard to get lost! Highlights are implemented so you know what can be edited or not!

Usage

Upon opening the plugin, You have several options that you can do. One is to press on an existing generated terrain, or press Start Plotting (Create New). For demonstration purposes, start by pressing that button.

If you are brand new or unsure on how it would look like, you can press Spawn a Sample, this will spawn in a circular set of points, named Point, all group together named TerrainPoints.

Upon either pressing the Start Plotting (Create New) or Spawn Sample, you enter in a plotting phase 1. In this phase, you will plot out the boundary points for your terrain, basically an outline of where you want your terrain to be generated.

When you finish plotting the boundary points, press Confirm Outline to move to the next phase.

This next phase, you will be plotting the surface points, essentially points that have a difference in elevation or location.

For optimization purposes, there is a safeguard that will prevent you from moving to the generation phase if you have an even amount of Points. Ensure that you have an odd amount to ensure proper generation of the terrain

When you are finished with plotting the surface points, press on the Confirm Points. You will be asked if you are really done with plotting the points, as you can not plot new ones until you come back after full generation of the terrain.

If you do continue, it will finally generate the terrain. At this point, you can change the material and color. You can also enable the Paint Click+Drag to only have a certain amount of triangles to have a different material and color.

At this point, you can press on Finalize to finalize your terrain. You will now be brought back to the main menu, where can press on another set of TerrainPoints or anothe genereated terrain.

Known Issues / Limitations

“When I edit an existing terrain generation and want to restyle using the Paint Click+Drag, it doenst apply the color!”

This is primarily my fault, it will be fixed in the next hotfix, which should be soon.

There are some other smaller minor things that might not be working well, but I rather not fall into feature cramming and not get an update out.

Future Plans

I plan on adding more things so that it is more feature-complete.

  1. Prop Tool

I plan on adding this soon. It will be like Prop Line Tool in Cities Skylines

I am open to feedback!

If you have any more features that you wish to see me implement (atleast to the best of my abilities) or find anything wrong that needs fixing or just general feedback, please let me know. Contact me at Trellux#trellux or find the MDU social link to the server.

Hello!

Happy Holidays! After publishing the update for the Road Generator, I resumed the work to get custom colors to work and save properly. I also made improvements to the triangle generation so its more consistent and less random, and made sure that it self-optimizes the generation so that there are less triangles overall.

(Images shown are using TrITerrain for the terrain, excluding the far off mountains)

Hope you guys enjoy the update! See you in 2026!

nice, but why?
why make a plugin to make terrain (triangular to be specific)?

Before I do go though, In case anyone wants to see the changes from version 1 to 1.5, here are a few.

[All are from the same single, large terrain area]

The different plugins I have seen for terrain generation is either limited to a square grid, limited in range and coverage, so I wanted something that isn’t area limited and can cover as much ground as possible.

As per triangles, its mainly for complexities that a simple part can’t do, particularily elevation and shapes.

ah, so you made it because you wanted a terrain generator that isnt limited to a square grid or range & coverage?

Yep. Building driving games is something that I always wanted to do since discovering studio back in the day, but there is always the same 3 issues that plagued me and many others.

  1. Proper Road generation

Creating roads can seem very simple, but if you ever wanted to tackle something like the mountain roads with steep elevation or even recreating some race tracks, having proper curves that isn’t flat or just creating a coherent circle is a pain.

  1. Scenery

Scenery building is important, can’t go without it. Making it also semi-believeable is also an important factor too. It’s also a limiting factor on how big games can be since filling in all of that space is a pain.

  1. Infrastructure

Can’t have a city without buildings yea?

All of these 3 is what kills any driving focused games, and I wanted to atleast make a dent in getting a tool to work properly that can atleast ease the work load.

So the Road Generator plugin came about, and when I finally figured out how to properly use WedgeParts, it was of a obvious step that I also make a triangle terrain aswell.

Hey! I have abit of news!

I have finished an update for TriTerrain.

Basically, TriTerrain and CivilArc ToolKit has now been linked and have the same interface, so it will be much easier for me to change things around when needed, and you guys wont get lost anymore. I have also implemented some settings that you guys can change, like the theme color of the plugin and unit changes (MPH ↔ KMH, Ft ↔ M and so on). These will be available for you to change and it will be saved with the plugin.

TriTerrain has plenty of updates, major ones too.

You can now plot points via the Point and Click ability, ported over from the CivilArc Road Toolkit (Formerly Bezier Curved Road Generator). There is also a small ui dock that displays the amount of plotted points, the estimated triangles and the estimated coverage of land (either Acres or Hectares)

Also included is the per sub-triangle material and color selection, where you can now select the material and color for a specific triangle. (Not possible through the come back edit mode, coming soon). Speaking of which, you can now come back to an existing terrain generation and continue to edit it by adding, removing or adjusting any of the points with the capability of regenerating the terrain.

Additionally, you can now also attach onto an existing terrain’s boundary points when plotting new points.

Overall, a large update, so I hope you guys enjoy!

Here some screenshots!

Here is the update log for those who are curious.

Hey! It’s me again.

Looks like Roblox is slowly updating the Camera in Studio for everyone, and it affects this plugin as it utilized the Studio camera for some things. So here is a small hotfix for it.

As for new features, there isn’t any in this one but there are stuff lined up. Stay tuned!
