I recently started looking into how sponsoring UGC items works on Roblox, and I was honestly surprised by how limited the system feels compared to sponsoring experiences.
As a developer, I use Sponsored Experiences quite often. They are useful not only for bringing players into a game, but also for testing icons, thumbnails, audiences, and understanding what actually performs better.
UGC sponsorships, however, currently feel extremely limited.
The sponsor page itself gives creators very little control. There is no way to target users based on interests, avatar styles, catalog behavior, or anything similar, even though Roblox already has a recommendation system capable of understanding what kinds of items a user is likely to be interested in.
There is also very little room for optimization. You basically choose:
- Age groups
- Campaign duration
- Daily budget
And that’s about it.
But the biggest problem, in my opinion, is where sponsored items are actually displayed.
When someone opens an item’s page, most of the screen is occupied by the item itself and its information. Below that, there is a large recommendation section.
Meanwhile, the Sponsored section is pushed much further down the page and receives very little visibility. In many cases, you can barely even see the sponsored items without intentionally scrolling down looking for them.
That makes me question the purpose of spending Robux on these campaigns in the first place.
If the goal is to help creators promote new UGC items and give those items an initial push, sponsored items need to be placed somewhere users will naturally see them.
A possible solution
I think sponsored UGC could work much better if sponsored items were integrated directly into normal catalog discovery.
For example, Roblox could:
- Show sponsored items naturally alongside regular catalog results.
- Add a small “Sponsored” label underneath the item.
- Include an information icon explaining that the item is promoted and may be shown based on the user’s interests.
- Allow sponsored items to appear inside the recommendation carousel on item pages.
- Add targeting based on catalog interests, avatar styles, item categories, previous purchases, or browsing behavior.
- Give creators more campaign analytics so we can understand impressions, clicks, purchases, CTR, conversion rate, and cost per sale.
This would make UGC sponsorships much closer to the usefulness of Sponsored Experiences.
I don’t expect paying for sponsorship to guarantee sales or automatically push an item into Best Selling. The problem is that, in its current form, it feels like sponsored UGC does not receive enough visibility for creators to properly test whether an item actually has potential.
Creators should be able to use sponsorships as a tool to introduce an item to the right audience, collect meaningful performance data, and potentially give a good item its first push.
Right now, it feels much more like a Robux sink than an actual advertising tool.
I would really like to see Roblox expand this system, especially as UGC and Marketplace discovery continue becoming more important for creators.
