Unusually High Ping on Roblox Only

Hello, I am experiencing an unusual network issue specifically with Roblox. My connection is stable in every other online game and service, and I consistently get very low latency (around 20 ms) on all of them. However, when I play Roblox, my ping is significantly higher, averaging around 80/120 ms.

This happens even when:
I join servers hosted in my region
My network is not under heavy load (no downloads/streams running)
My ping to other games/services remains low at the same time

What I’ve Tested:
Restarted router and PC
Flushed DNS + renewed IP

Changed DNS providers (Cloudflare / Google)

Checked for packet loss (none outside Roblox)

Verified that no VPNs or proxies are running

System Info (brief):
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7x 2700x Eight-Core Processor
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Network: Stable broadband connection

What I’m Trying to Determine:
Is this a known networking/routing issue with Roblox servers?
Or is there a client-side configuration or known bug that could cause Roblox to route traffic inefficiently?

Expected behavior

I expect Roblox servers to provide stable low ping similar to the 20 ms I get in other games.

Are you sure about this?
You should join an empty baseplate (‘private’ server), and see if the issue is also present there.

Also having this issue. 14k+ ping, happens out of the blue and is sporadic.

StreamingEnabled?

Yes streaming is enabled. Its just the lobby so its not a big place at all

I get upwards of 150+ ping in any state which isn’t California, yet I can get 20 ping in a Team Fortress 2 server in Fort Worth.

Thank you for the detailed report! I’m assuming the source of the 80/120ms value for ping is from the Performance Stats bar, is that correct?

Can you check a separate ping measurement available using the “Raknet” debug overlay? To access this overlay, press Shift + F3 then press Shift + 1 until you see an overlay on the right side of your screen titled “Raknet”. You may need to press Fn to enable function keys on some keyboards. Press Shift + F3 again to hide the overlay.

These values are often elevated when the game is first opened, so wait about 30 seconds to get the most accurate number.

Once you have this information, please report back with:

  • Where you are seeing the 80/120ms number
  • The approximate values you see for ping, avg, and best in the Raknet debug overlay
  • If the values in the Raknet debug overlay match your expectations

Hello there @ramblinwrek,

I am not the original poster, but I believe that I also suffer from the same issue mentioned in the bug report. Since the performance stats got updated to reflect the same values that GetNetworkPing sends, I can no longer compare the values I get from it and from the values I get from “Raknet”.

However, I can still share my current ping values from both the performance stats after the change and Raknet:-

I am not sure why, but I do get huge occasional latency spikes from usually stable 90ms to over 250+ms at very random times.

Another thing is that, there’s still discrepancy between the values that “Raknet” shows and the “Network Ping” that the performance stats show. Not sure if it’s just variations in updating speed but just thought it would be fine to report it out and I wish if they both get to be the same.

If the higher than usual ping numbers compared to other games isn’t considered an issue, I am sure sudden spikes are, right? Or is it just server FPS issues being measured and taken into account here which makes the whole ping measurement inaccurate once again?

The user ID used when testing this out is 3135952119, and the game ID is 17899316027, and it was tested out around the same time when typing this, in case you need this information. I didn’t have background apps or processes eating up internet bandwidth when testing this in my device, nor other devices doing so. The server I got connected to was in Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Deutschland. This server provides the lowest ping for me however it isn’t the most close to my physical location. The most close is in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which I almost rarely if never get assigned to automatically which sure is reasonable because I get higher ping there despite it being closer to my physical location, which I can’t seem to understand why.

Edit: What’s now known as the “data ping” is usually ~150ms+ for me, which is significantly higher than the network ping. This is of course on the server on Frankfurt. What’s with the replication or whatever in the process is happening taking too long? This is noticed in all experiences.

I’m getting super high ping too. 600ms in an empty baseplate, it’s quite absurd.

It’s happening in my games and the game in my group. I disabled all the scripts, disabled StreamingEnabled and I’m getting ping in the hundreds.

However, it seems like in random games I played from my home page it’s normal:

As you’ve pointed out, with Roblox release 699 we have updated how ping is reported in performance stats to now show “Network Ping”, which is also visible as raknet ping in the debug overlay I described. More detail about how we measure ping is available in the creator documentation.

Some spikes in the measured network ping time are normal due to lower level network packet queues and packet processing delays. There are ongoing efforts to reduce the frequency of these spikes and to improve the network latency from clients to servers generally, but I don’t have any specific updates to share at this time.

The difference you identified between data ping and network ping is also not unexpected, there are also ongoing efforts to bring data ping closer to network ping, but again I don’t have any specific updates to share.

Network latency is affected by physical distance between you and the server, but it can also be affected by the internet route between your ISP and each Roblox datacenter, which likely explains why you observe a lower ping time to Frankfurt than to Mumbai.

Since the Server CPU change on Nov 10, I’ve been experiencing performance degradation across many games that I manage. Maybe this post is regarding the same underlying issue.

@CoffeeAPI_JSON @jackjenningsdev

We have also been experiencing this issue. Ping randomly spikes to 10k+ for a couple hours. It is also consistently higher on average, around 100-300 ping. We cannot find any cause or replicate the issue., as it it completely random at times and cannot see anything wrong in the dev console. It seems “Network Ping” is showing normal information, but developer console is showing insane numbers.

It seems it is also a server side issue, as core player scripts fail to load immediately for all users. It has been occurring for the past week or so.

I’d like to also throw my hat into the ring and say that I’ve recently been getting quite a few reports from players saying they’re experiencing large ping spikes in my game, some even saying that it’s so bad it makes the game unplayable. It’s been incredibly rare for me to receive performance complaints like these until these reports started around a week ago.

My team has been noticing high ping spikes every so often in experiences we work on, pretty annoying and can’t see any valid reason for them happening. Only started recently.

Possibly related?

Today, I noticed that I wasn’t able to load into industralist anymore (which requires a teleport to get into the world)
I then played some bee swarm simulator and eventually joined the retro swarm challenge hub (which also requires a teleport)

In the main place, my ping is as good as roblox has ever shown on my end, but in the hub with significantly less models, it’s at least 7-10 times higher, I’ve tried to rejoin a few times, my WiFi should be perfectly functional, but the high ping always returns in the subplace

i had like 172k ping once and i get 1k ping average all the time

If you are observing sustained high data ping in your own experience, it may be due to large amounts of network traffic causing queueing delays. It may also be caused by low frame rate (heartbeat) on the server or client, as data ping messages are processed once per frame.

Please see this section of the creator documentation for more details and suggestions for how to investigate potential causes of high data ping.

High data ping in individual games are not within the scope of this bug report, which is focused on consistently high ping for all Roblox games compared to other games and services.

Marking this issue as fixed now that the performance stats UI reports “NetworkPing”. NetworkPing more closely matches the concept that other services report as “ping”.

How is this exactly fixing anything? it’s been weeks now that for whatever reason, Roblox Player abruptly loses connection in any game i test this issue on.

It should be noted that ping jumps to the thousands on some games or in this specific situation, the program does not regain connection.
The minimum amount of time these lagspikes have been lasting are upwards of 30 seconds, the one screenshotted lasted 5 whole minutes and did not stop until i closed Roblox Player, and every time i’ve experienced this big lagspike, no other program running in the background was also affected by this supposed loss of connection, ever.

Hi @AlexFranma,

The issues you described involving disconnects and ping spikes are outside the scope of the original bug report, which is about ping on Roblox being consistently higher than other services, but still stable around 80/120ms.

Please review my message here for suggestions about debugging high data ping spikes.

If you still suspect there is a bug in the Roblox engine, you can file a separate bug report following the directions here.
