Username Reset Format Violates Roblox Terms of Use and Trademark Policy

Description

When a user’s username is reset due to moderation or other reasons, the system assigns a default username in the format roblox_user_<USERID>. This format includes the word “roblox”, which violates Roblox’s own Terms of Use, specifically the “Creator Terms” → Section 2 → Clause 7, titled “Roblox Trademarks”:

Creators are prohibited from using the name “Roblox,” “Blox,” and any name similar to Roblox (to be determined in Roblox’s sole discretion) in the titles of any Experiences, usernames, display names, or community names.

Because of this, users whose usernames are reset are automatically placed in violation of the Terms of Use, despite having no control over the new name assigned to them.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Have a username moderated and reset by Roblox.
  2. Observe that the new system-generated username is in the format roblox_user_<USERID>.
  3. Refer to the Terms of Use (Creator Terms → Section 2 → Clause 7) and see that this format violates the policy regarding the use of “Roblox” in usernames.

Expected Behavior

System-assigned usernames after a reset should not contain the term “roblox”, to avoid triggering an automatic violation of Roblox’s trademark rules.

Actual Behavior

Users receive usernames that include the word “roblox” (e.g. roblox_user_123456), violating the very policy Roblox enforces – even though the user had no choice in the matter.

Why This Matters

  • Users may face additional moderation simply for having a system-assigned username.
  • The policy violation is caused by Roblox itself, not the user.
  • The Terms only allow the use of “Roblox” in usernames under a rare exception:

“…any Creators who Published Experiences on the Services prior to June 22, 2022 that contained “Roblox,” “Blox,” or similar names… may continue to keep such name(s)…”

This exception is irrelevant for nearly all reset username cases.

Proposed Solution

Update the system-generated username format to remove the trademarked term. Alternative suggestions:

  • user_<USERID>
  • reset_user_<USERID>
  • placeholder_<USERID>

This would prevent Roblox from unintentionally putting users in violation of its own Terms of Use.
