Using DevForum Tags Appropriately

Add a new rule on the DevForum rules, or add it as a subsection of the use correct categories rule:
Use DevForum Tags Appropriately

I was searching for a GFX artist under #collaboration, and I used the GFX tag to search, and I found multiple portfolios using the tag “GFX”, even when it was something like a UI design portfolio or Programming portfolio.

This can be annoying and isn’t fair to others who are actually GFX artists and using the tag GFX correctly.

Agreed.

It’s very unnecessary to have too many tags. For example, if you have a GUI tag in there already, you don’t need a UI tag. Plus, if it’s a category name, then it’s redundant as well. A #resources:community-tutorials post shouldn’t have a tutorial tag in it.

All of these little things can get annoying for searching and reading, but at the same time, there should be a better way of teaching certain “common sense” ideas instead of cramming them all into the rules. I guess PSA megaposts are good, but who’s gonna read everything and remember it? On the contrary, scattered and separate posts for each individual thing won’t get everything across to newcomers.

Hopefully, users with genuine intentions can learn over time themselves.

I strongly and firmly agree. I had seen a builder’s portfolio with the tags scripter and UI. Sure, the tags make it easier to find your topic, but it’s like asking for a salad and getting spaghetti instead.

The tags that don’t even relate to the topic make it hard to find topics that actually match the tag.

I agree. I don’t why people use the tag #studio for topics or self-explanatory tags for categories. For example, you post a topic in #help-and-feedback:scripting-support, and then tag it as #scripting. They can also get quite redundant.

For anyone who is tracking posts looking for the correct use of the term ‘AI’, this is a pain. I think flagging for incorrect/nonsense tag use should be a thing (not to take down the topic, but to remove a tag).

Does anyone actually regularly browse through tags that this is big enough of an issue anyway? Nonetheless you could possibly message the Community_Editor group with topics you think have unnecessary tags.

Then again I have #collaboration muted so maybe im not seeing the bigger picture.
