Variable storage in survival games

in games like minecraft and terarria, your inventory space is fixed, but with dynamic/variable inventory space in games like subnautica, you can wear upgraded dive suits to expand your inventory space on the player, but if you take it off while holding max items, the items just fall out of the player.

i’m planning on using a dynamic inventory system, with the amount you can carry being tied to the amount of units you have, but dropping your items the moment you lose a unit because they cant carry any more seems like it will be quite annoying for people to handle..

are there any other alternatives than just the items fall out of your inventory?

I mean, you’re wrong? There is nothing in Subnautica that expands your inventory space, all you can do is spam down lockers and whatnot.
(Unless you’re meaning below zero, I’ve avoided that one and know nothing abt it)

Anyway, I honestly dislike having upgradable storage. Sure, it makes trips shorter and less repetitive, but it removes inventory management entirely. There’s no “Do I need this?”, it just gets boring with more storage.

Anyway, you should look at fallout. Sure, not a good system, but overencumbering is better than just dropping items.

No player wants to drop random items on the floor. You could always give the player sub-containers e.g. a box (but dont let them nest them). Then they drop the box/bag still with its contents.

depends on how the inventory system is made. In my game as of right now, clothes store items, and u can wear those clothes to keep those items on u and therefore increase inventory space. But dropping those clothes also drops all of the items inside of the clothing with it and picking it up picks up all items inside of the clothing aswell.
