Weird Strange Librarian

Background

I was recently hired to revive and modernize Weird Strange Librarian, a previously popular horror game that had fallen off due to a lack of updates from the original owner. The original concept is solid - players visit a public library late at night to study, but things go wrong and you need to survive/escape the librarian. It takes inspiration from games like Weird Strict Dad, Doors, and Residence Massacre.

Right now, it attracts about 60 players a day through residual algorithm. The issue is no one stays and plays for a longer time than a round, if that. I’ve added as much as I can think of in order to promote engagement and playing, and streamlined it to be easy to hop into a game as soon as possible. I have yet to add chance events (random things that happen during a round in order to add some replayability) but that is the only thing left in my ideas.

I’m looking for community feedback on what features/improvements to prioritize next.

What I’ve Completed So Far

Core Systems Overhaul

  • New Generator System: Completely rebuilt the power mechanics
  • Enhanced AI: Improved librarian behavior with better pathfinding and more dynamic interactions
  • Hard Mode: Added a new difficulty tier with increased challenge
  • Bug Fixes: Resolved major gameplay-breaking issues that were driving players away

Visual & Atmosphere Updates

  • Lighting Overhaul: Significantly improved the atmosphere and immersion
  • Asset Refresh: Updated textures and models throughout the library
  • UI Polish: Cleaner interface and better visual feedback

New Gameplay Mechanics

  • Book Collection Task: Added objective-based gameplay while hiding from the librarian
  • Gas Can System: 4 gas cans placed around the map that players must collect and bring to the generator
  • Escape Mechanics: Players now need to run from the librarian to reach the escape door
  • Enhanced AI Behaviors: The librarian now stalks players with randomized waypoints, complex chase behavior, and unpredictable patterns

Current State

The game is functional and significantly improved from its original state. The core loop works well - players gather resources, complete objectives, and try to escape while avoiding the librarian. The atmosphere is much more engaging than before.

Questions for the Community

  1. What made the original game appealing to you? (if you played it or a similar game)
  2. What’s missing from modern horror games that this could fill?
  3. Would you prefer more puzzle-solving or pure survival mechanics?
  4. What would make you want to replay this type of game?

Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions! What would help me to revive this game?

Chapter 2 is planned, but I want to ensure the foundation is solid first. Additionally, Chapter 2 will be a significant undertaking, so I need to ensure the base game is as enjoyable as possible.*

Try adding some revive system. Like Wormy, or Evade, to name a few.
