What are beneficial styles of UI for the Roblox platform?

First, let’s get to what “beneficial” means in this case. By beneficial, I’m aiming to depict it as the most accessible and recognisable for players.

The more accessible and recognisable the better, right?

No, it’s all subject to the genre you’re in, however, I think we can all agree that the Roblox player base is used to vanilla studio created user interfaces. These are usually referred to as “cartoon UI”, but are we moving over to a point where these can be considered obsolete? Designers are tending to move away from flat studio interfaces and creating more complex and industry-renowned interfaces.

Take TedArthur (his work can be found here) for example, you really do not see anything like his work on prevalent on this platform, older players enjoy this experience as they would’ve seen relative designs elsewhere off the Roblox platform, as the main demographic is younger children, they would’ve most likely, not seen many games with such interfaces. Sure, the commissioners are taking a risk with their player base (not with him, don’t mistake that). Players may not like change, and therefore, strive away or have a harmful retaliation to game ratings.

However, with vanilla interfaces, younger players are used to and supposedly, enjoy the experience. They are always experiencing the same sort of interactions within many games and feel within their comfort zone when playing.

Older players may not enjoy this however, and neither would commissioners (depending on how they’d like their game to be portrayed to potential customers), but it’s a start.

As a UI Designer, it’s really difficult to find the balance between extra-ordinary, and different, because too much doesn’t lead to a good impression.

Is the Roblox platform ready for a change in what they see when they play games, or do you think it’s a too big of a step forward from what we have currently?
