What is the purpose of the introduction megathread?

When you post in the introduction megathread, your post will just stay there and not be visible as like 5 new replies to the post are made every day. Nobody actually said “Hi” to the people on there, and many people don’t just browse the thread for new introductions.
So, what is the actual purpose of it, with not even a “hi” for you in there?

I got a hi from my introduction when my nickname was zucchini :pensive:

As the name implies the topic is a megathread so discussion doesn’t really happen there

But aren’t megathreads supposed to either be for questions, or for bug reporting, or literally anything where you can get a response?
See Reddit megathreads; every day is a new one and questions are being asked on there; people that have the interest will answer to them. This megathread has literally no purpose; this is a DISCUSSION forum.

It does have a purpose, so new members can feel welcome and introduce themselves. It is also getting read often, and

that is pedantic

Just a place to introduce yourself if you’d like, there’s no real purpose for it. It was smaller, less frequently filled and quicker to welcome new (and shy, possibly) members to the forum before the new member program was enabled (this was before automatic entry was granted).

When the new member program first rolled out it quickly racked up responses. You can probably tell that when automation rolled in, the thread’s replies blew up. Users now have a banner above their first post as a sort of introduction. :man_shrugging:
