What would the best way to gather feedback on features from players?

Greetings! I am working on possibly the biggest update I will ever create, and I am finding out the best way to gather feedback, on either changes or bugs found within these new features. What would the best way be?

  • Randomly give a certain percentage of players access to a feature
  • Allow players to opt-in to certain features
  • Opening up a test game

In the past, I was against test games, as the player would not get excited for an update when it does roll around. When the Bloxy Kart community was bigger, I had a test form that players could apply.

If you have another way that I should add to the poll, please let me know!
Thanks in advance!

While I don’t know how it would work in practice, in theory I think having a feedback GUI or surface GUI where a user can input their feedback of the game in general may help. Perhaps give an input suggestion for the user to give feedback specifically for your new feature, or to place the surface gui part nearby the new feature.

I agree with your point of a test game where it makes users not excited for an update, as a developer who extensively tests updates before release, I often find myself not very proud of my work as I was during the testing phase.

I think that for some games it can work, but for others it can negatively affect the update launch. For example a tech demo might well suit simply BEING a test game, or for a fully planned out non-beta game, you may want to have a specialised team of testers who will test updates, and can get the job by filling out an application form.

I’d say to open up a test game, but only for developers/friends so regular players don’t see the update early.
