When it comes to putting together a city game is there a trick, trial and error or is it all talent?

Ok, so lets talk. When i look at jailbreak and the city they have i notice 2 things. 1 its not that special, roads are wonky in someplaces, buildings are subpar, decals glitch, etc. However when you play it, and don’t look at it from a game design standpoint it feels fine. In fact it feels great. What makes that formula correct. What makes jailbreak the best city game I’ve played on the site? Is it the roads, The game type? The conflict between cops and crims? the size?

It depends if your game is more about focusing on the city or not, in games like that you arent focused on the city so its like a puzzle with a piece missing but youre passing it on a train, if you sit down too look at it then you will notice the pieces missing, same goes for large builds in general, if you focus on the build as a whole you wont see the missing parts, if youre going for a more showcase like game then its trial, error and a talent for seeing detail, if not then its just putting it together

Agreed 100%. It depends on what is the focus of your game. For example, with restaurants, the focus is on hanging out with friends or eating and not so much on the restaurant it self. Which is why most restaurants can get away with having less than amazing builds. While on the other hand, airlines are all about the detail and recreating the experience of flight, so they need to have highly detailed airports, planes, etc. It all depends on what is your game about.

Also, I think the reason Jailbreak uses basic designs for the city is partially to reduce lag. Building details into a city that can’t do much anyways would be a waste and increase lag.

Well then that will be an issue for me because I am planning to make a city sized showcase…

What you can do to reduce lag and have a giant detailed map is use Streaming Enabled. What it does is only load parts of the map when a player is near it. So they don’t have to load the entire map upon join, which if its big can take awhile.

Perfectly said, i think my issue is going for a city as functional as jailbreak but being as detail orientated as a showcase.
