Which one would you prefer? Choosing a difficulty, or a randomized difficultly?

Hey everyone! It’s me, scythe. I have a question for you today. Would you prefer to be able to choose the difficulty of the level you play on, like this:

Or would you rather want the difficulty to be randomized, like this:

I know it didn’t change in the gif, just an example.

Please leave any thoughts or question down below and I’ll love to answer! If it helps you decide, my game is an obby type game, like flood escape, (game in the gif and picture).

Thanks for reading and have a nice day!!

I am 90% sure about what I am about to say.

I believe Flood Escape’s difficulty selecting algorithm is not random and is actually based on the completion rate of previous maps. Difficulty is also presented as a nature of the map itself, since normal maps do have a hard mode.

Now for answering the actual question of the thread, I don’t really think that randomised difficulties is good for the user experience. There should always be a way to predict deterministically what difficulty you will be ending up on if you don’t give users a choice, or you can give users a choice and let them play at their own pace and comfortability with higher difficulties yielding higher rewards.

Don’t think it’s really a question that needs lots of depth gone into it but there are these little factors that need to be accounted for before you settle on something.

yeah it was just an example lol

Ah okay I understand what you mean. I’ve made up my mind, I’ll still leave the post open for thoughts, thanks!

Some people may like to be taken by surprise and test there skill levels in random maps! But yeah, I kind of agree with you.
