Question is as simple as the title. I attempted today to move my roblox files using mklink on windows.
If you’re unsure what mklink is, just think of it as a kind of shortcut, but also not really since it continues to use the previous directory instead of changing it.
Basically, just to attempt to clear up as much space as I can, I attempted moving both the Roblox and Roblox Studio filles over to another drive on my computer (as my C drive is only 256gb), however, I found that studio got stuck perpetually loading, but the player could load just fine.
After undoing that, I attempted moving just the Versions files in the player folder, which the same problem happened.
So now, I’m just left asking, does anyone actually know why studio fails to load when using mklink?
Command I used to create files
Attempt 1, moving both files as a whole: mklink /D "C:\Users\[me]\App Data\Local\Roblox" "E:\RobloxMKLink\Player" mklink /D "C:\Users\[me]\App Data\Local\Roblox Studio" "E:\RobloxMKLink\Studio"
Attempt 2, only moving Versions. mklink /D "C:\Users\[me]\App Data\Local\Roblox\Versions" "E:\RobloxMKLink\Versions"
Roblox Studio often does not load with mklink because:
Studio checks file paths, permissions, and versions very strictly, and some Studio components do not work correctly with directory symlinks, among other things. The Player is more tolerant than Studio.
Therefore:
• Player usually works with mklink
• Studio often gets stuck on the loading screen
To fix this, you could try:
Junction and not Systemlink, e.g.
mklink /J “C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Roblox” “E:\RobloxMKLink\Player”
You can also try moving only large cache folders or version folders.
I would recommend leaving it on C.
Thank you, using /J instead of /D makes it work. As for leaving on C, I’d rather not as roblox was one of the largest files remaining on my C drive after clearing as much of it as I can, and even then, I only had 50gb of space left before moving roblox, which I’m wasn’t awfully comfortable having on my main drive. I’d rather have more space incase I need it for something more important than roblox.
