Hi, I’m making a silly single-player anime board game (link to game) based on a real Steam game called “100% Orange Juice!” and I need some honest feedback about what real players think.
The real game is super engaging and overstimulating, but when I play my own game, it feels too sluggish and I get bored of it before I finish a playthrough.
This was originally just a quick game jam project I threw together in a week many years ago (which is why some of the UI is super unpolished & the outdated screenshots in the thumbnail are even more amateurish. Just made a new in-game logo last night, gotta make a new thumbnail and icon still), and I’m suddenly in the mood to expand it into a proper game and sponsor it, but I know if I did that right now, most players would leave within minutes.
I’m especially looking for feedback that can help me with these two things:
How can I improve the onboarding / get new players to understand what’s happening in the game / what they’re supposed to do?
How can I keep the player locked in and entertained?
A short interactive “learn as you play” tutorial could be good. Tbh i clicked to view your tutorial and got so bored reading that i skipped through it all and had no idea what i was doing when i got into the match. Also, maybe make it start by default, with an optional skip button. When you presented the two buttons, one gets me right into the action, the other could potentially suck, so i wanted to click “i know what im doing.”
Other than that, you could have a few more indicators in game which are reminders of what to do. For instance, you could blink the possible squares you can walk to instead of just making them partially transparent. Even maybe a “you landed on x type of square!” Or something.
Made clickable squares blink as suggested above instead of just staying semitransparent (a little unsure how I feel about it, might tweak it or temporarily disable it)
Updated the tutorial (has the same info as before, but it should be a little easier to digest)
Made some bugfixes to the battle system, also made it so your turn ends if you battle another character
Replaced some of the old outdated thumbnails with more up-to-date screenshots
Something I heard from a playtester on Discord is that the game feels like it’s going too fast at first when you don’t know what’s going on yet, but once you get the hang of it and understand it, then suddenly it feels too slow. I wonder what I could do to address this?
