An elusive graphics bug, caught on camera

So for a year+ I’ve noticed a strange line appear across my screen in certain lighting conditions.
Today, when adding snow to my game I was able to reproduce it by looking at a white sand part…

When I first discovered this bug I noticed it also appeared in screenshots, but I wasn’t able to report it to anyone because I wasn’t in this forum that long ago.

Finally though, I’ve managed to screenshot it.

My graphics card is a 750Ti (welp) but it is running the most up to date drivers. The issue has been present for at least a year or two.

It’s part of the screen space ambient occlusion effect. It appears along the middle of the screen vertically when the surface is a medium distance away (when it’s too close it’s probably too flat to get the shadow, when it’s too far there isn’t any SSAO).

No idea why it’s there, I don’t know why it would be there. Maybe the math that is done differently for the top vs bottom half of the screen and it causes a discontinuity?

You’re not crazy, I’ve seen this for a long time on my computer too.

It only happens when you look at terrain.
I’ve only noticed it over terrain.

Here I was looking at a blank part, no terrain to be seen

Yeah this matches with what I see, as I zoom out, the line appears - gets slightly bigger - then disappears.
