In my game, player characters wear accessories with the material set to metal. For aesthetic purposes, I want to keep player bodies on the battlefield. Does anybody have any information on the performance of materials, specifically the metal material?

To my knowledge, almost all materials have normal maps and therefore have the light reflection calculations being set on them. The reflections on the metal material should not affect gameplay.
If you would like, try running tests by counting FPS and memory in a place with many anchored parts; maybe the same number of parts as you estimate could be on the battlefield at one time. Using just one may not let you see an impact on any performance. Change the materials around and see if you notice any changes.
The metal material is just as performant as every other material on Roblox. If users are experiencing lag, the lower graphics qualities automatically adjust the fancier properties of materials.
