[BETA] Revamped Asset Manager

Hello Developers!

We’re excited to announce a beta for our revamped Asset Manager, a step towards empowering your Studio workflows for all things assets!

We’ve revamped the entire backend and frontend to build a new asset management foundation, enabling better usability & scalability. We’re now launching a beta for the first set of features, and want your feedback as we build a more powerful and intuitive tool.

These features include searching for assets in user and group inventories, sorting and filtering tools, and quality-of-life improvements for viewing and using assets. For an in-depth guide, please refer to our documentation. Otherwise, read on for a quick overview!

Where can I find the new Asset Manager?

In Roblox Studio, go to File → Beta Features and enable the beta Revamped Asset Manager. Once you restart Studio, you should be able to enable the new tool in the same place the legacy Asset Manager was.

What can I expect?

This initial phase focuses on two key improvements: consolidating functionality between Toolbox & legacy Asset Manager, and enabling you to easily find assets across your personal and your groups’ inventories.

Welcome to the new look for the Asset Manager!

Consolidating your workflows

We’ve brought together assets under your personal and group accounts into a single interface, paving the way for a unified experience. This includes the ability to import various asset types and view them alongside your existing library, all in one consolidated space.

View assets shared with your experience, owned by your groups, or purchased by yourself.

Easily find your assets

Our new search system allows you to quickly locate assets across inventories and specific asset types:

  • Search all your assets, including images & meshes
  • Search across uploaded assets, assets acquired from Store, and assets shared with you
  • Search assets in your personal account or in any of your group accounts
  • For models, use semantic descriptions to match results

Select an inventory to search for assets of a specific type.

Enhanced efficiency and personalization

Optimize your workflow with improved sorting, filtering, and bulk action capabilities. Customize the UI by resizing or hiding columns, configuring the sidebar and fine tuning the size of thumbnails in the grid view to tailor it to your unique needs. Create a workspace that maximizes your productivity!

Filtering

  • The new Asset Manager now includes all your images and meshes. To optimize your view and find what you need, you can filter by asset type, source (uploaded, shared with you, acquired from Store), creator, and other fields.

Multi-select & bulk actions

  • You can select multiple assets and perform bulk actions like inserting or copying asset IDs. The right-click action may depend on the asset type. We will also add additional bulk actions in the future.

Insert

  • Inserting an asset automatically places the instance under the currently selected instance in Explorer.

  • Note: Drag and drop is not currently supported. We are working on adding support soon

Add filters to your assets to only view one asset type at a time, like the legacy Asset Manager.
Shift or Ctrl/Command Click to select multiple assets at the same time.

What’s coming in the future?

When the revamped Asset Manager leaves beta and is available to all creators, it will replace the legacy Asset Manager as well as “Inventory” and “Creations” tabs in Toolbox.

We will also add additional features! In the short term:

  • Drag and drop assets into the viewport, explorer, and more (to be released in the coming months)

  • Easily bulk-manage asset permissions & configuration (later this year)

  • Hierarchically organize & categorize your assets (e.g., folders/labels) (later this year)

And in the long term:

  • View additional metadata, such as asset moderation status

  • Reduce clutter in your inventories (e.g., archiving, versioning)

  • Get a full scope of all assets that are associated with your experience

Changes from Legacy Tooling

  • The new Asset Manager currently does not use or manage aliases, and we are exploring what this feature looks like in the long run. Please reach out to us with feedback as we plan this out!

  • Avatar accessory assets that were visible in the Toolbox “Creations” tab are not currently visible in the new Asset Manager. We are assessing how we want to display these in the future, and will find a replacement workflow before sunsetting those tabs in the Toolbox. (later this year)

Your feedback is essential!

We want to gather your feedback to shape the future of the Asset Manager, as we continue to work on additional features. Enable the new asset manager, explore the new features and share your thoughts here.

We also welcome any feedback on which future features would be most valuable to you. Your insights will directly influence our roadmap and help us create a tool that empowers all creators.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Known Issues

  • Some elements of the Asset Manager are bugged when loaded in conjunction with the Next Gen Studio Preview beta feature. Please disable one beta to use the other for now, and a fix should be coming soon.

  • Some users may experience issues when searching very large inventories, mainly when searching for meshes or images. We are working on stabilizing our search system for these use cases soon!

Although I do appreciate the effort on revamping older parts of studio, I feel like one thing should be taken care of before the next. I do understand this is in BETA, however the new Explorer that was forced on us not too long ago has so many keybind-related features that are either broken or are not present. Although it’s a lot more performant, which is very nice not having it feel resource dependent, the amount of bugs and stuff that’s come out of it makes me just want to go back to the old one and wait until the new Explorer is fully polished and fleshed out.

I’m just hoping this isn’t the same case, and I’ll reiterate that I completely understand it’s in a beta state, so take your time! I’m excited to see where this goes.

These improvements all help to reach the objective of organizing our assets in a more efficient way, especially the feature to create folders, categorize them and name them.

I would like to see a bulk assetid feature that lets you copy the id of 4 images and insert them as a PBR material into MaterialService. Copying the ids manually may not take a lot of time when you do it once, but it adds up if you have experiences with 40 or even hundreds of textures.

The future of this is bright though (just like the name of the render engine), together with the improvements to the explorer I see the trend of maximizing the functionality of all the Studio panels a great idea before adding more to it.

Docs coming soon for all the UI configuration bits and bobbles, but there’s several options for working in different window sizes!

  • The sidebar can collapse, and it’ll automatically fully collapse when the window width is very small
  • You can right-click on the list column headers to hide/show data. You can also resize the column widths
  • You can resize the sidebar as well!
Let us know if you have other suggestions for what UI features we can add to help with this. We’re also working on saving these configurations so that your tweaks are retained across editing sessions

@TechyPlains deeply appreciate the understanding around it being a beta. :prayer_beads: Let us know how we can best help serve you and other creators on this! Feedback here goes straight to the engineers working on this project.

Thanks for the screenshots! It’s super helpful to see the tool in the wild

Little tip - You can collapse the sidebar via the icon in the bottom left for more space optimization. Try it out and let us know what you think!

I accidentally figured it out lol

I gotta say, this beta is pretty good, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

The one thing I miss about the old one is that it doesn’t tell you what modules you added to the game, which can be a bit annoying. The fact that I can’t right-click and preview the asset in the window doesn’t sit well with me, and for some reason, when I click on the asset, it doesn’t insert it; I have to click right and press Insert Asset.

Also, the dropdown for the asset seems like too much to do. Maybe I’m just lazy, but I feel like I shouldn’t have to click two times to change the asset category.

Otherwise, this is a great upgrade to the standard asset manager.

Folks, I’ve checked the charts. I’ve done the math. We’re undeniably back.

Ah yeah, the preview feature was definitely useful, we’re looking into how we can rework that into something more modern with relevant details, that fits in the new UI. Stay tuned!
As for the click behavior, this Asset Manager has very filesystem-esque behavior:

  • click once to select. Shift click/ctrl click to multiselect
  • double-click your selection to insert
And as you noticed, other ways to do the same action exist in the right-click menu.

And noted, thanks on the asset type filter feedback! Keep it coming

Thanks for the quick feedback!

Another thing I noticed was that it shows assets that are NOT owned by me or other collaborators, which could be quite useful, but in most cases, it clutters up the list and prevents me from finding ones uploaded right into the game.

Thank you for this update!
Unfortunately, I found a bug that was in the Viewport Options.

I use the asset manager frequently to access other places in my game
However the new asset manager doesnt show me all the places, and searching for them doesnt work either.

The game has 167 places, but the old asset manager atleast loaded every game when scrolling down

could this get fixed please? thanks!
