Hi Creators,
Thank you for your constructive feedback and for raising your concerns.
Are adults of different ages limited from using Team Create together? How can I use Team Create with someone whose different in age?
- We’ll share more on age groups for Studio in January, but adults will not have limitations on collaborating with other adults similar to how 18+ will work for chat.
By the time age checks become a requirement, we’re also planning on having solutions that will let you continue collaborating via Team Create with the people you know and trust – regardless of age group. This includes Trusted Connections, which we’ll be expanding beyond Party chat to enable you to chat in-experience and collaborate via Team Create. We’ll share more here in January.
Are age checks required to use Studio? Is completing an age check difficult?
- Age checks will not be required to access Studio regardless of age. Age checks will only be required when using Team Create to collaborate with other creators. Facial Age Estimation was designed to be as easy and straightforward as possible; over 21.4 million users have already completed the process voluntarily.
Why are you implementing age checks for Team Create and other places on Roblox?
- While we are committed to making these changes, we know that this will be a difficult adjustment for some. This means improving safety across Roblox and Studio with a number of new systems, including age checks. We’re also prioritizing solutions to address as many of the needs and feedback we’ve seen from the community as possible, and maintain the creative and social aspects of the platform.
How accurate is age estimation? What happens if someone is put into the wrong age group?
- While we have more on the accuracy of age estimation in our original update, if a user is put into the incorrect age group they can correct their age through ID verification. For young users without an ID, then they should talk to their parents about creating a linked account.
When do users complete an age check?
- Users can either complete an age check either with Facial Age Estimation or ID verification anytime; completing either one will give them access to chat, Team Create collaboration with other creators in Studio, and if they’re over 13 the ability to view links and use voice chat on Roblox. Once completed, users can see their age group by going to their account’s Settings > Account Info.
How do age groups work, and how is Roblox making sure that interactions stay safe in addition to age checks?
-
Users are put into age groups based on the age they signed up with, but are unable to chat until they complete an age check. If their estimated or verified age is significantly different than what they entered when signing up, their age group will be adjusted. If age estimation has incorrectly estimated your age, you’re able to ID verify or have a linked parent account correct your age.
Additionally, all of our existing safeguards and moderation, including our text chat filtering, reporting, and banning systems are still in place. Age checks are an additional layer on top of other systems. For creators who actively play a role in moderating their experiences, we’ll be introducing options that will allow you to continue to moderate, even with the introduction of age groups. We hear you on how important this is – we’ll share more as soon as possible.
How are you making sure adults don’t use accounts with a younger age to chat? How can creators moderate their experience chat?
-
Facial Age Estimation is just one of the ways that we check the age of a user. While we can’t detail all the methods used to detect those who are maliciously working around our safety systems as it could make them less effective, it’s a layered system that we’re constantly improving. Age checks are in addition to our other moderation systems – all of our existing safeguards and moderation systems are still in place.
To help moderators effectively moderate their chat, we’ll be introducing new ways for them to identify any potential safety issues in their experience and report them to Roblox.
