i feel this post has been misinterpreted, my position is more nuanced than a simple agree/disagree.
many people love saying that “roblox needs to do better”. they love to talk about how david bazucki is facilitating predators, and how roblox is unsafe for kids, while simultaneously saying how the chat filter is too restrictive, or that age verification is bad.
however, nobody really brings to the table any practical solutions. how do you do “better moderation”? they don’t understand the sheer scale roblox operates at. it is logistically and financially infeasible to hire mass human moderation (and much of the time they too will get things wrong)
while i disagree with the concept of ID verification in general, i support this change as somewhat of a message - that all the people complaining about the safety of Roblox have finally gotten what they asked for, a real change to the platform that will undoubtedly prevent child abuse
there’s so much of a general stigma around verification because of the privacy implications, and i do disagree with how roblox has gone about this, but i don’t see an alternative for Roblox’s future given the number of lawsuits and the real concern of children on their platform
that being said, this is a rushed update to appease investors and state regulators. personally if it weren’t for my developing on the platform i wouldn’t follow through with verification.
does it do the job of protecting children? yes, at the risk of damaging roblox as a platform
