So I cannot work on any games that I am being paid real money to work on.
You kill all profits for smaller development groups, and then make it so only age verified people can make games with others? Do you want people to stay on roblox, because, this sure isn’t compelling me or anyone else to stay.
Does Roblox want users(devs/mods) to actually moderate their respective games outside of Roblox provided sources / avenues?
Not sure if it hit main stream media but a lot of game controversies I seen include underage devs / game staff moderating potentially adult content?
Oh wow that’s so weird! Posting it right on the recommended deadline of DevEx Exchanges too! Wonder how that happened!
You can’t be seriously simultaneously demand better child safety, lower predation risk, stronger moderation consequences… and oppose every form of verification that makes those things possible.
ROBLOX doesn’t get to choose the philosophical ideal. They have to meet the legal bar imposed upon them.
If your personal threat model is extreme enough to reject any verification at all, that’s fine — but that’s a niche position, not the industry standard regulators are enforcing.
And it’s not realistic to expect global platforms to base policy on the preferences of users who reject all verification mechanisms and isolate themselves.
These are protecting children at risk; not digital nomads
Random, but I wonder if the recent Nepali revolt sparks enough south asian government dissent for young attuned minds to ban Roblox
this is genuinely hilarious why am i seeing this only now
This all implies the assumption that the people you are actually trying to separate from kids wont just “verify” them self’s as “kids” anyway…
You should re-read what I said, I did not say it would fully prevent grooming or child impersonation, I don’t think that can ever be eliminated. No system is perfect. My point was this is a frequent occurence with ZERO barriers in place stopping you. Needing to purchase a <13 account or getting a child to verify for you makes this significantly harder and by extension will reduce the number of cases.
Yes I seriously can because this “verification” does NOT solve any problems, and it certainly doesn’t make those things any more possible than they already are, as I have clearly stated in prior posts. What actually will solve these problems is fixing the reports system that basically acts as a nice little decoration that will maybe punish spammers or bullying in chat at best but is completely useless when people who know what they are doing and want to help protect the community report actual violative accounts or predators with actual proof that can be investigated further are unable to see any meaningful action taken against those users.
The only scenario I can ever even remotely support Roblox going such a nuclear route as this one is if they actually have a properly functioning report and moderation system and it has been proven in action that it’s not nearly as effective as it should be.
It seems my comment hit the nerve for a lot of people, people going as far as private messaging me lol ROBLOX has had lawsuits from multiple governers, an entire Roblox movement on youtube, Twitter, etc talking about kids are endagered, every post by an official account on Tiktok, Twitte,r or youtube is fileld with comments saying its a pred site etc etc, so when they finally do something about it, you people still complain. Nothing will make you guys happy, and it’s sad that I simply said I am glad they’re protecting kids is met with people needing to insult me, calling me a child just because I do not agree with your opinion. Going as far as saying I used chat gpt, lol. If you want to go to Unity because Roblox is being stricter with kids talking, then go. Theyre making the platform safer from a real threat, theres been too many victims. Id rather take them being too strict than less strict and letting kids go through things they should never have to that affects them for life. I am going to mute this so replying is useless, but I really hope many of you grow up and mature. I know many people on here still do not have a grasp on reality, but insulting someone just because you disagree with them is so childish, grow up.
I can relate to this a lot! Getting playerbase feedback on my games keeps me going and I won’t be able to get that anymore once this update is out as a 21+ age group player. Sadly they don’t seem to care about this or any of the long list of long term consequences this update will have.
EXACTLY: I don’t want to give Roblox my ID, if Roblox has a problem with that and masks it as “Child Safety” while really it’s just to train their ai and get data from users, I’m leaving this place and finding a new one where I can actually do things I enjoy

Chat:
- Super Safe Chat for <13, crude birthday check is fine
- Better automated tools; chat filter needs a complete rework as its garbo, needs to be universal for most ‘chat/message’ areas - uses previous, say 5 min, as context
Development:
- Restrict team create to >13 players for the general playerbase (e.g. schools can use custom accounts).
Moderation:
- Hire 10x more moderators (TikTok is about double the size and has 10x more mods in comparison, assuming stats are still dated)
- Remake the ticketing system so you can see a status on your ticket (e.g. been read, been filed, being investigated, internally handled, resolved, etc)
- For any “online safety act” crap, apply it ONLY to those related countries, and its related to 18+ content not <18 in most cases.
Other:
- Send a email out to ALL accounts to alert them to update their account birthday to be accurate. They can also send addition information like checking your children’s online activity.. they have a whole outreach here… There can be opt-in news as well. [VERY EFFECTIVE BTW]
- For schools, create a “education” ‘account type’ which prevents it from chatting and doing all these features, then make similar ‘account types’ for, say, <13.
Important Notes:
- Chat communication is critical for activity on the platform
- Grouping ages together in chat is just an effective way to let predators choose their target age range… At least without this, everyone is mixed together.
- If you disable chat, people go off platform, its inevitable, even for <13.

Children are being protected, yes, but at the cost of everyone. This is like going to a doctor and having your whole leg chopped off just because they were “protecting” your body from the infection on your big toe. It’s too much and will genuinely cause major decreases in MAUs, especially in communities that rely on chat (which is, conveniently, every game that isn’t making Roblox millions per day on product purchases alone).
Also, just like with exploiters, bad actors will find a way to circumvent this system. AI age verification has been shown to be fooled by Gmod 3D models from over 20 years ago. And there are extremely realistic models of children available online for free. It would take a bad actor, at most, 10 minutes to circumnavigate the system as of right now.
Whats the current record for noisiest thread on the devforum by chance?

Protecting Children is not your first priority… understandable…
Is the age estimation AI trained on a diverse dataset? One thing I wonder about is guessing too young on individuals who are a tad chubby (which could be mistaken for baby fat - seriously I’m gonna be 30 in a few years and I still get mistaken for a teenager somehow), or guessing too old on black kids (which iirc has been an issue with similar AIs).
I made a short informational video regarding the new age check requirements
As others have said, this update is extremely damaging and risks making hundreds, if not thousands, of games unplayable. Especially in the roleplay genre and in the strategy genre. Particularly, games in those genres with small communities where matchmaking will make small, unplayable servers. I personally run a Military RP group that gets up to 20-40 CCU, which will be completely destroyed with the implementation of this update. Not only that, but communities with moderation teams won’t be able to moderate effectively if a moderator is over a certain age group; they won’t be able to communicate and moderate somebody else at a different age group.
On top of the issues I already pointed out, this update won’t even solve the problem; it’ll only isolate age groups into particular servers, allowing people with fraudulent ages to pick and choose what ages they want to target. Assuming that somehow these predators aren’t able to smuggle their way into age-locked servers, people who want to communicate, especially those who are more restricted, will migrate to off-platform communication methods. Ironically, these off-platform websites were where most of these incidents occur anyway. Roblox was just the gateway, but now, with this update, it seems like the process has just been expedited.
To clarify, I’m not opposed to improved child safety and moderation on the platform, or even the age checks themself for that matter, but rather the heavy chat and communication restrictions after the fact. This update was clearly done without careful consideration of the repercussions to the quality of the platform.
