I probably should’ve clarified because I don’t even know what ROBLOX uses but yeah (IF) ROBLOX uses AWS it wouldn’t be their prices.
Dunno how I feel about this one, it FEELS like a gateway to making more things paid in the future.
I’m not against the idea of being able to buy more storage and I assume this is just a thing for big studios that need exceptional amounts of storage.
I’m of course a one-man-army, I couldn’t afford to pay for more storage every month, but I also hope I won’t ever need it.
Anyways, I hope my gut feeling is wrong and that this is only for extended services and whatnot and won’t ever creep into the things that us small devs already get for free
Pretty sure Roblox already makes billions as is…
I have absolutely no reason to need this, but this sounds cool anyways!!!
i hope this gives us extra freedom and not extra constraints
Just set up a VPS, cheapest you can find start from 5$ a month, make a simple API with SQL and there you go, fixed monthly price rather than confusing usage pricing.
One of the providers I recommend:
Can you just make it Robux instead of actual money?
This is concerning. The whole point of Roblox is to let people easily create popular games with free multiplayer functionality, free servers, etc, with the caveat being that Roblox takes a larger cut than other platforms.
Stop shoving things behind paywalls. It does not help any party in any way. Roblox already makes a profit from the many things they have shoved behind Premium / ID Verification which includes UGC accessories and their ridiculous price floors.
Still really cheap prices, especially because only 30 games are over the limit (Probably blox fruits, etc). I’m surprised we’re still getting moderately cheap things AND free things in 2025.
My brother in christ, you don’t have to worry and never will. ONLY 30 games are over the limit.
Well. It’s official, the start of P2w ROBLOX development is here.
This is an extremely slippery slope that I seriously hope doesn’t go where I think it will, but with this corporation’s track record… I think we all know what the future holds.
I’ll be watching this situation with great interest.
also genAI
Yeah. This is pretty much how I feel. I don’t hate the idea of paying for extra DataStore space (even though we USED to get all the DataStore storage space we needed, for free), but this opens the door for extremely predatory practices to pop up later on down the line. Everyone should tread lightly and keep their eyes peeled for bs paywalls in the future.
I think it’s a good idea for the big game studios, but if they start limiting more things that were previously free and adding new paid features it could be the end of Roblox as we know it.
I dont really want to do defend corpos but this move is anything but p2w roblox development. Like all game development companies provide further paid services for additional/expanded functionality. Then again, as roblox themselves said these costs are of no real interest for like 99.999999% of us. This is just stuff for super big games (which also generate quite a lot of revenue) to expand overall functionality.
Secondly, it would likely be in the interest of roblox to NOT reduce or restrict general functionality away behind a pay wall. Roblox is a corporation that strives off tons of games made by tons of people and trying to nickel and dime us while providing poor services will likely result in a quick death for the site. They would pretty much shoot themselves in both feet if they were to start pay walling development for all people. Them doing this would also likely be the perfect opportunity for competitors to come and knock them off their throne with simple claims such as “you can make games for 100% free!”
You could make an argument about how roblox now provides paywalled additional functionality which should have been free considering the current devex rates but eh. At least they are not removing free functionality and placing it behind a paywall. (Hopefully they arent doing that, lmao)
Secondly, it would likely be in the interest of roblox to NOT reduce or restrict general functionality away behind a pay wall.
You underestimate just how idiotic ROBLOX can be.
They already tried to shoot themselves in the foot back with the marketplace policy update in 2023. We shot them down of course, but if we hadn’t then the platform would probably be pretty dead.
ROBLOX is a billion-dollar corporation with investors to please. “Their best interest” is making more money to attract more investors, period dot end. If they feel like they can get away with paywalling more and more stuff, they absolutely will do it to make a quick buck. Your average consumer is too complacent and/or too oblivious to stop spending money on ROBLOX, the loss from paywalling stuff will likely be less than the gain.
They will nickle and dime us every step of the way, as much as they can, until they stop getting away with it. You’ve seen how YouTube is, there is nothing stopping ROBLOX from doing the same stuff.
True, youre not wrong. Though i do believe that them directly cutting down on available resources for free users would be a little more yknow… direct compared to the marketplace policy update. Games gotta constantly grow sooooooo ya.
Though heres an interesting scenario that could come out of these new extended services. Roblox could potentially simply set the free-tier service celling just below these paid-tier services. What roblox could do is MUUUUCH slowly upgrade free-tier while expanding hard on the paid services with the excuse that the free-tier is “good enough” for an percentage of games that will likely get obfuscated as time goes on. If this scenario were to actually take place, it could likely result in a time (5-10+ years in the future) in which the free-tier services are not even a fraction of what the paid ones are. So if you wanted to make a proper game roblox would likely keep you stuck with barely anything requiring you to cough up more cash to actually be able to make whatever you wanted.
Maybe this scenario is a bit extreme but them being more dishonest about how much were getting with the free-tier compared to the paid-tier all the while devex rates remain the same is something that may happen. I hope not.
-- aren’t these for file storage? i don’t use AWS so idk what their service names are but i’d be looking at their databases for user data storage, data buckets are not equivalent to Roblox’s datastores
-- not having infinite storage space isn’t a slippery slope that’s just realistic business practices. you have to be using an absurd amount of data to even reach this point, my data-heavy game isn’t even using 1% of its storage cap.
-- you’re calling this pay to win like this is a video game and not, the real world, where “needing to fork over money to store thousands of gigabytes of user data” is a completely standard thing. roblox was the exception here and while it’s like a sliver disappointing we no longer have Unlimited Storage, absurdly generous amounts of free storage is still a really good deal
-- bigger games cost more money to make, That’s Just How Life Works™️
Would be sick if they also offered this for memory stores!
For requests, you’re just switching from datastore’s api limits to httpservice’s
But you see, these prices are is for additional usage AFTER the base amount, which is btw, free.
