Today I was thinking about the concept of Badges and how they work.
You can’t change the Image of a Badge. This is annoying, since multiple developers said that they were really ‘messy’ with images those days. We would like to update them
Why can’t we just ‘remove’ a badge from our gamepage. If I want to create a badge for a Christmas event for example, I’m stucked with it. A expire date or manual progress would be really nice in this case
A better way to showcase ‘Badges’ (Or Achviements as I would like to call them) on the profile page. So that you actually see what it means.
What do you think about the Badge system as developer ? Discuss ! [/quote]
Personally, I’ve always figured the best way to do things like this is an entirely custom and in-game system. The only benefit to using actual badges is advertisement for your game on other people’s profiles.

You are right about that. I actually use a in-game system, but the point is that you don’t longer have those ‘bragging’ rights anymore.

I don’t really think the whole ‘bragging rights’ thing was ever applicable with badges, due to the fact that you can only show a few of your most recent badges on your profile. No one is going to take the time to flip through your badges, especially because most of them are spam.
I think it would be much better if we could maybe ‘accept’ a badge if we are awarded it? I hate getting a badge for ‘meeting the creator’ or ‘1000 visits!!1!’.

I agree, but only if that isn’t in game. It would be quite silly to get a Badge for killing ‘1,000’ Players for example. And then get a popup (like the Marketplace Service) or you would like to accept the Badge. (And then get killed xD) So a web notifaction that you can actually accept it would be really nice
I think it would be great if player badges were categorized by game. Like maybe the game thumbnail with the number(or percentage) of badges earned. You could the click that thumbnail to view the obtained badges and possibly even unattained ones which would be greyed out. Right now it’s just a very messy unorganized list of badges.
While undoubtedly useful, I don’t think any of these ideas are high leverage. As badges stand right now, there are some fundamental problems:
[ul]
[li]Users don’t know when they have earned a badge since there’s no notification.[/li]
[li]Users can’t see on a game’s page which badges they’ve earned. They have to open each badge in a new tab and look for the small gear in the corner to indicate ownership.[/li]
[/ul]
This makes badges useless as an achievement system. Until those two core issues are fixed, there’s no point in adding badges to games.
Separate locked image that appears on the badge, indicating it hasn’t been acquired yet (uploaded alongside the main unlocked image)
Square icons!
Progress badges that can store a progress value for each player, enabling things like “kill five orcs”, and allowing the users to view their progress from the game page.
Menu-based badge list that displays all the badges in a game with progress, ownership, images, and descriptions.
Some system that allows us to rig the badges to automatically give out player points when earned. Player-point-awarding badges would be indicated on the site and the menu display. Possibly just increase the amount of money needed to create a PP badge, or have the dev refill a badge’s individual budget when necessary
Notification tie-in (notifications are the system that tells you about FRs on the bottom right). They would tell you when you unlock a badge.
And they should be renamed to achievements.
EDIT: Also, an out-of-the-box idea that isn’t quite baked yet: Use the menu gui I mentioned to “pin” badges so they stay on the screen and you can track your progress while you play.

There’s a notification, it was shipped in yesterdays update.
Hey OP, you can remove a gamepass of your game page by hitting delete from my inventory on the badge. They will get discontinued from the game forever.
I think if badges were tied into points in some way, more older games can become relevant again without needing an update, and badges will be more like achievements/ challenges.
Like whenever someone displays a badge on their profile, that badges attributes an extra point to it whenever someone earns it. So badges are only as valuable as the amount of players “proud to present it.”

But then common badges would be worth more points than rare badges.
Perhaps it should be related to the number of people who get the badge each day? 100/day would yield the most PP and it would go from 100% to 0% PP yield as the awards per day goes down to 20 or up to 5,000.

wot
I said badges would only get a point attached to it when someone says “I want this badge to show up on top of my badges/ my badge trophy case!”
On the user’s profile it’d be neat to have away to search badges earned from a specific game.
On the game’s page it’d be neat to have the badges you earned from that game be highlighted or has a special mark on it.
That way users know what badges they have and know what challenges they have left to get the other badges.
I’m about to use badges in my place to avoid adding more data store requests. Allot of these suggestions are pretty good and could help make badges even better.
I really like the idea of having a trophy case where you can display a limited number of badges. Hopefully people will put their rarest badges in these slots.
The way I see it, badges can be used to help market your game. ie) x goes to y’s profile, and see’s y has a cool looking badge, then goes to the game and also tries to get that badge.
Aside from that, merely is totally right the badge system is completely ‘broken’ and overlooked.
