I’m a recent member of the DevForum and I can totally agree with you. Sometimes when I read the Community Resources category it’s filled with trash posts looking for attention. There NEED to be a Post-Aproval for that category.
(I already read what @TheNexusAvenger said about it, but I’m just giving my opinion)
There was a post that I saw in #resources that contained a backdoor. Everyday I think that the category is becoming Toolbox 2.0
I messaged the community sages about a week ago regarding what the Top Contributors could do to contribute more to the forum, but I haven’t gotten a response ever since because they’ve been busy or my message was too hard to respond to. As the forum’s population increases, I see this as an opportunity for us to help balance the workload.
Edit:
My post probably sounds selfish, but of course I’m also considering what the other TCs would think about this.
While I trust every top contributor on the forum and honestly personally don’t really have an objection against giving top contributors more power / roles if they choose to accept it. I do also think it goes against what the role stands for, in the fact its just for those that are ‘best’ at using the forum actively.
At the same time I would propose some of the top contributors to potentially get sage title, because obviously as you said the forum is growing but the staff team is not, and potentially hiring more people for PA / Sages could help manage the forum more effectively, especially as it seems top contributors such as yourself are willing to help contribute more to the forum.
Edit: Your post doesn’t sound selfish, sorry I don’t think I worded my response as clearly as I could of. I was just saying giving top contributors power goes against what I think the role is for and promoting some TCs feels like a more accurate step.
I did keep this in mind in my message to the sages, and I don’t think we necessarily need more permissions/power, I think we need more tools if that makes sense.
For instance, let the Top Contributors review the source code of the posts in #resources to ensure that it’s safe for the public before being posted.
Honestly I would think your right in some cases and in some cases not right. The other day someone literally made a post in #resources called “The Unjoinable Game” and literally all he did was give you a model that would crash your game.
Since post approval will not be coming back to resources, do you have any solutions in mind, excluding what I am suggesting in this post; to bring community resources out of the garbage and back to its former glory?
Never been a fan of group ‘punishments’ (could be argued this is incorrect terminology but the deduction of a permission I would most likely class as this), however I guess this is the second best solution (from my perspective). It’s just a shame that all the members making good resources will be restricted due to the people incapable of reading the guidelines.
Likewise, I believe that there is a good chunk of members that actually post insightful things to #resources:community-resources, that aren’t regular members in the unofficial group. This would essentially be locking down that area to 891 members, many of which aren’t even active on the forum anymore.
There certainly has to be a better way to go about this.
I completely agree. This does apply to other categories though as I’ve seen people post “My XYZ!” and then in the description, they say it’ll be released in a couple weeks. They should make users read the rules before signing up to the devforum.
Stop it with “it is unfair to members capable of making good resources”. If they are capable of making a good post in #resources then they are capable of using Post Approval enough times in #platform-feedback to get Regular to post in #resources. And plus, these members have already made their posts.
There is absolutely no disadvantage of locking it away to regulars.
A alternative to this is that DiscoBot quizzes you randomly on the rules like every 50 posts or 10 read hours or something like that then you get 72 hours to reply or you will lose your ability to post until you retake a full test. Maybe if you receive feedback 3 times then it’ll give you a full test as well
The problem with flags, is we have been told to flag them for I think around 2 months now (hard to keep track of time in quarantine), and I, at least personally, have not been seeing any sort of long term impact or improvement, if anything the quality has degraded more and more.
There are times for reminding users of the rules politely, and there are times when action is needed to keep the category useful and not just the garbage can of anything someone made that they find funny.
Whenever I see something that doesn’t fit into the category, I flag it for a moderators attention and I also send the user a PM briefly explaining [my personal interpretation] so if it is just removed by DET, the user will at least know.
From my personal experience, it’s more of poor user experience (people not knowing the process) than malice. If it’s the later, strikes should be handed out.
