Experiences using Marketplace Items - Policy update

After thinking about this for a few days, I have some thoughts on my mind I’d like to share in regard to this upcoming change, I’m aware that this update isn’t cancelled since well…

If this update comes out and it’s equally bad as the initial rollout then I think my times up with this platform because think about it there’s no point in continue to develop if I’m just going to be punished for using classic ROBLOX related items off the catalog.

I’ve stayed while others quit and despite thinking about retirement, since I enjoy playing games and wanting to eventually go big with developing and achieve my dream of going to RDC one day.

There would be no point in logging on anymore if classic games I like are wiped out, let alone modern ones such as arcane odyssey over the use of catalog items.

We already know very little are going to comply with this change and I wouldn’t either.

I would just let my place go into limbo land of being placed under review, because I don’t think forcing the player to buy said catalog item to use it in the game is a good idea.

There’s no sugar coating it.

I’d like to state that again it’s understandable for only UGC related items on the catalog made by others and again in the event I did use an item and the creator was upset over I would comply with a request for removal including a DMCA, but classic ROBLOX made items and off sale items not being allowed???

Even developer relations members were scratching their heads over this announcement says a lot, and I believe it’s coming from the higher-ups that are severely out of touch with the community or that never played ROBLOX in the first place, if not anyone else that’s incompetent enough which shouldn’t be working at the company in the foreseeable future.

I will say that sometimes it honestly feels like ROBLOX as a corporation has it out for us developers.

^ I won’t be going in depth since that would be going off topic.

But regarding my feelings this to me is an example.

Are we not the blood that powers the imagination platform?

Often, we get these types of updates that ROBLOX puts out which hurts us but this out of all of them is the worst I have ever seen, this could destroy the platform in my opinion.

The hypocrisy of ROBLOX suddenly caring about us using UGC in our experiences/games whilst ignoring the UGC members pleading to not destroy the market with limiteds.

Continuing to fail at moderating the catalog with users that don’t deserve UGC privileges by abusing it while at the same time giving a written detailed way of reporting us which I have never seen before up until this point.

I think this is a good example of the hypocrisy with ROBLOX expecting users to report us while letting stolen assets go on the marketplace like this for example:

Assets that are ripped from other websites are on this platform, assets that are ripped from other users are also on the catalog and remaining on sale, assets that actually violate copyright remain, as you can see with this image above it’s not hard to tell where these assets were “inspired” (stolen) from.

^^ As of typing, none of these have been taken down for the blatant copyright abuse clearly going on, I’m not trying to start trouble but really this needs to be pointed out with ROBLOX initially expecting users to report this type of stuff, it’s not that hard to see why this is stupid.

It’s pretty tiring, I do care for this platform since I’ve been here for nearly 15 years of my life, I do not enjoy coming on here to yell at terrible announcements, while the audio update was necessary I can work around that, I can make my own stuff and just use free sounds, this however? Is it really necessary?

I just wonder who thought this was a good idea, and again just please don’t go through with this.

I think ROBLOX as a whole would be a healthier place if corporate just listened to us for once, instead of making decisions that they think is a “good idea” which ultimately hurts us in the end.

Just read all this. And I agree! If their going to do a copyright policy on us. Why not exactly do a copyright policy on ugc items and not us game developers. Because it actually dosent make any sense to just formaly take away our rights to use accesories from the catalog when no such ugc creator ever cares about their ugc items in someone’s game.

Either way ugc moderation sucks. It dosnt make sense to add more moderation to something their bad at and not very formally with. So I really think this policy is just crazy. They should qualify new staff that actually played roblox and not chatgpt policies. I agree with ya!

roblox trying not to create stupid and harmful for its community policies for 1 day (impossible!)

so real though, i bet with the next update they’re gonna ban everyone who still uses r6 and r15 instead of their disgusting rthro creatures

Nah, they’re gonna convert anyone wearing R6 to R15, and maybe, just maybe, turn everyone wearing the 1.0 body types into those NeoClassic avatars very few people like.

All of this, yet there is a MASSIVE lawsuit just waiting to happen with the mess the UGC catalog is currently.

You guys know it, you’ve dealt with these things before, but it seems like it’s only a “must fix” problem when you get called out with legal threats.
Meanwhile the money keeps rolling in for all those copyrighted assets…

Other Companies won’t be kind a second or third time, they will destroy you legally, and your neglect will be the cause.

In exchange, the community will receive a hard restriction on all ends, just like the audio update, because you couldn’t work well enough in time and prevent a mess.

Personally, I’m all for it. Anything to knock some sense into this stupid company.

I personally don’t think anything’s going to change unless Roblox has a change of leadership.

Did they really just take the mesh of Mario and Bowser from Mario 64 directly from the files or something? Screw that 1-Up Mushroom-looking backpack I showed in an earlier post, this is even more worthy of a lawsuit! If Roblox doesn’t take action against this, UGC is DONE FOR. And if Roblox goes forward with this update (which by then UGC won’t even be a thing anymore, if Roblox gets sued anyway), that only means we can’t use Roblox’s items, making the whole point of this update (to protect UGC creator’s rights), completely worthless!

Sooner or later this was bound to happen with UGC. I was initially optimistic for this program but people have demonstrated that it clearly was a mistake, and now ROBLOX is profitting off of blatant copyright infringement. This will come back to bite them, likely with a fat lawsuit, and when ROBLOX inevitably gets dommed by a giant corporation like Nintendo, they’ll probably just remove all user-generated catalog items from the platform.

ROBLOX. Powering Imagination, until we get sued and then ban anything imaginative because we can’t moderate our [content deleted] platform.

Probably they rename them and model them bad enough to claim protection under copyright law as “fair use” as a parody.

And then we’re probably going to get a video from greenlegocats123 titled “RIP ROBLOX UGC (again)”. Twitter and Instagram are both going to go crazy over this the moment the removal of UGC is announced. Commentary and News YouTubers are going to make bank too. Gone will be the hair combos, shoulder pals, and auras from the Marketplace. Gone will be the masks, visors, and outlines that allowed you to be something you normally could not be. Gone will be the layered clothing tailored for a certain avatar type. But then again, gone will be the knock-off limiteds, copyrighted content, and low effort accessories that have plagued the program since its inception.

I mean, first off making all UGC limited is kinda a bad idea, since it might limit people from being able to buy stuff for their avatars, if the creator of an item decides to just never replenish the stock.

And also not being able to use items which are offsale, or having to constantly have a purchase button kinda sucks, as literally hundreds, if not thousands of games will be affected, and for some it will ruin the atmosphere.

It actually appears so and I initially thought this was ripped from the actual ROM file however this might be an actual re-creation since Imo it feels “off”.

Either way I think I proved my point with this, if ROBLOX expects us to be reported they better moderate their platform first.

‘now is the time to set things right
(Now!) now is the time we should unite!’

In all seriousness, this is horrible. I’m glad people are setting their differences aside to talk about this. Going through with this change will ruin the platform for the worse.

That’s just ingenious. Making a 1:1 recreation of something from a game that happened to be made in the advent of 3D gaming. It looks so unpolished that it could actually fall under fair use in a way because of parody!

That lawsuit is coming any day now. I can just FEEL it.
