Extended Light Ranges: Doubling the Limit to 120

Great idea. I think to maximize simplicity and convenience they should also add a new LightRangeService and two new instances: LightRangeExtension and ElectricalWire. These instances would work similarly to how the Audio API works in that you use an ElectricalWire instance to connect the LightRangeExtension instance to an existing Point- Surface- or Spotlight instance to modify the properties more efficiently and to further power innovation on the platform.

Ohhhhh, so you need to connect the LightRangeExtension to the ElectricalWire in order to modify the range more than 120? I like that!

I think they should also add another manager for increasing the amount of ElectricalWire you can place into workspace. It will error if you place more than your limit. This will greatly benefit the amount of payments going towards the power grid.

I understand, but one bigger lamp will always be less laggy than multiple smaller ones.

Also if a developer wants to destroy their game with the biggest lamp Roblox has ever seen, it should be their choice. The virtual limit set restricts creative control

You could almost say that the team responsible for working on this update has nothing to do with whatever team is currently working on getting 4k texture support released…

I have been wanting this update for many years. This will benefit Roblox visually in positive ways. More realistic long distance lights for street lamps, car headlights and stadium lights.

Hi I have a few questions:
With the upcoming light attenuation improvements mentioned for the next few months, what API changes or new properties should developers expect for more granular falloff control?
Is the team considering moving away from individual Light instances? Could the direction be a new API with a more centralized lighting service?
What range limits have you evaluated beyond 120 studs? Which are ruled out because of the performance impact? a specific range thats unacceptable?
Thanks!

Can we anticipate another doubling?

no, ad credits and age requirements are enough

it would also be fantastic if roblox could make the sun come from a specific unit vector

that would be such a relief, especially for devs making sse2 and upg ripoffs

one more reason to switch to unity

nice update

Shadow LOD seems to be really bad.

Walking towards a doorway with a light source set to 120, you can see when you get close to the door way, the shadows become more accurate. But if you walk 5 studs back, the shadow LOD lowers, and light bleed is extreme.

This is even more evident in Studio where lights will bleed through walls after 60 studs.

Shadow range probably needs to be adjusted.

THIS IS THE BEST UPDATE!!

I’ve been waiting for this since 2015!! I’ve been wishing for a double limit or even 90 / 110+ BUT THIS IS PERFECT!! SO MANY THINGS CAN BE DONE WITH JUST THIS INCREASE!

THANK YOU ROBLOX!!

It’s a good update after waiting multiple years after FiB3… however it’s still a limitation that in reality shouldn’t exist, a light shouldn’t combust or cause major lag when above 120 range, that’s outright bad programming at that point.

Before anyone says anything, sure, it takes a while to create an optimized system… but it shouldn’t take multiple years for a billion dollar company.

Thank you very much to the Roblox team! :hugs: Now we can make very large light sources, for example, for someone who needs a large street lamp)

Great update!!! Now making city areas, can be a lot easier.

To say it visually, in the background this would happen to the performance if there was an unlimited light range in the current engine state:

It would be more beneficial to make a bigger change, but that would mean rebuilding the whole system. For now, not that useful, but long term it would benefit everyone.

and you need a valid government id to access this too

Yippie!! I can finally can extend the spotlights in my arena. Sadly still doesn’t reach the middle though, so I guess that’ll have to wait even longer
