Finale of Part Surface Changes: No More Hinges

I don’t think Roblox understood or cared what people were using it for and their solution is to build or use someone else’s plugin instead of giving us an easy way to tell what face of a part is what.
Could you imagine not being able to easily see what face is what in Blender or literally any other 3d software?
(TBH even this was not good, but it was helpful and less tedious considering the options we now have available)

Scrolling past these boxes is a non-issue as they could just collapse it by default making it 1 line. It was also near the bottom IIRC with only 2 or 3 properties below it. I don’t use tons of stuff, but I wouldn’t want other people to not be able to use it because I have to scroll past it.

Was anyone from the community asking for this to be removed for any other reason?
(speaking of the face properties and not the hinges)
I would think they could have kept them selectable without being edited like the resizable faces and resizeincrementface. I can’t change it, but it is there for some reason.

How about you let us insert a motor6d without requiring a script, command bar, or plugins?

Actually they’re adding an alternative for direction into the new lua draggers. The plugins are for until then

Also last I checked there’s a setting to add all objects to the Insert object menu which includes motor6ds

You have got to be kidding me.
I don’t know anything about programming so i will just stop making cars forever.
Welp, i litterally hate hearing F3X builders complain about this.

if you are trying to find the front of an object, try using adornees maybe? (if anyone even remembers that) idk any other solutions.

Theres so many people complaining about not knowing how to make there vehicles powered since the announcement of hinges being removed, they do not know enough about programing to get there creations working, then they come to people like me asking to install something for them, but the system i use is a massive pain to tune to work correctly. I think a simplified object like the hinge (or make the constraint hinge stock compatible) is required to ease this prosses.
I have also read that vehicleseats are now considered legacy or obsolete, this highly discourages me because my development, and many others as well, is based around this seat. One could script a vehiclesteat, however this is quite a advanced system that only experienced coders can create, and such coders do not share there work to the public, because they worked so hard on them. This means the majority of players who build vehicles are stuck using a buggy vehicleseat that is no longer supported (the seat runs itself after a player leaves and the camera is horrible, along with a few odd performance issues sometimes as a couple examples).
There are systems available to the public, but they do have there flaws that complicate there set up and installation, and they always use the vehicleseat to work, new developers no longer can simply build a car or train like they use to, as ones they complete there new build, they realize they have no clue how to make it work and ask people for help, then they find they have to learn the complicated prosses of coding or installing premade systems, by my experience, new developers are unlikely to understand how to make there vehicle drive, and you end up having to do it for them several times before they grasp it, once they learn, another developer is asking you for help a week or two later with the same problems…
not everyone is wiling to help these people either, and there no official wiki tutorial to send them to, like the one for making a car using hinges.

Im asking you to please reconsider your decision on the vehicleseat, and again easing the creation of powering a vehicle using the vehicleseat, because they still have a large and strong fallowing, bring a improved simplified system like the hinge for the simple vehicle builders, slap some hinge on some wheels and a block, put a seat on and go.
It would make our lives so much easier, and allow new builders to enter the vehicle development communities with much greater ease without annoying the experienced builders for help. Some are even unable to ask for help…

After this change I see the old dropdown menu, which was removed over a year ago:

I can also freely set Surface to hinge with the standard “surface” tool (not in the properties window).
(fyi I’m on build 432, released in may this year)
Can someone please explain what’s going on?

Maybe your studio is too old?

The current version is v451, and I can’t see this dropdown menu:

Uhh, this is also removed in newest verison.

Both features were removed in 2019, the studio build is from 2020.
You can read about the change here: Part Surface Weld Changes [Activated!]

I’ve never had a surface hinge wheel break it’s plane of existence while driving, however I’ve seen wheels with constraint hinges morph under the map causing the car to be stuck forever.

I personally don’t think there is anything about constraints I’d call “less finicky” than surface welds.

Again, this is nothing unique to constraints. Surface hinges and hinge constraints use the exact same physics solver with the same parameterization underneath.

Surface Hinges tend to be stiffer and not easily fold on themselves like Constraint Hinges.

Very unfortunate that now surfaces are hidden on all smooth objects. I loved to use hinges to identify front faces(only in studio), and studs/universal surface to help align things when building. This was a step in the wrong direction for me, I’ll have to code up a plugin just to regain the same functionality I had for years before.

So. With the VehicleSeat, a property called AreHingesDetected exists, but I’ve discovered that it will no longer detect new surface hinges made. I believe it was working, on some previous update.

Could you specify what conditions are needed to make the VehicleSeat use new wheels?

Pls add SurfaceParts back, I’m so used to using Surface parts, I don’t like to use hinge contrast (Unless it’s a door, a motor, a chain, or a buckle joint.)

Now does this mean I cant create a normal roblox car (without code using vehicle seat) it was really easy to do than scripting a whole car

Maybe I can cut off a piece from an old car asset which has wheel connected to a part and I can scale that part to be small and use it on my builds

Yeah thats very smart

Will, Surface parts be gone permanently!? I really hope not. :frowning:
