How do I come up with a good game idea?

Hello there DevForum Community, I have been trying roughly for the past month to come up with a good game idea, and have got nothing recently, I tried asking my friends if they could help but they said they have no good idea what game I should develop, quite a lot of them said most of the ideas are already developed on the Roblox Platform; I have even tried watching quite a few YouTube Videos on coming up with good game idea, but sadly none of them have worked. All I got so far is the thought of developing a Low Poly Styled game, if anybody could help me out here that would be a pleasure, and could also list a few ideas that would also be a huge pleasure, thx for your time and effort

  • Look for a cartoon you like, and try to replicate the style,

  • then think of two genres you like and fuse them together,

  • and after that you can ask your friends for features etc NPC’s, customizable avatar.

  • Finally you can look for a story generator and try that.

Against a backdrop of millions of published Roblox games, it’s likely that everything you can think of has already been done, more or less similar.
What you should do, in my opinion, is to focus on a single goal and go after it, regardless of the results.
The success of a game depends more on a stellar conjunction, God’s will, luck or whatever you can name it, than on the idea you have.
Of course, game quality, marketing strategy, etc. will influence a lot, but that is no guarantee of success.

I’ve opened the discussion, if anyone would like to add how they usually come up with good game ideas

I usually think of a game I like on Roblox… for example, elimination tower, an elimination game. I would look at the genre, this time it is all genres. I would change the genre, say to Sci-fi. Imagine that game as Science fiction. Aliens. Then get another game you like, In my case, it’s bee swarm simulator (My favourite game). The genre is Adventure. Mix that with the sci-fi idea we already came up with. Mix it with an adventure game. You might need to collect furry friends along the way. Each being a bonus. Maybe it could be like Super Mario Party, where you need to collect the stars, the person with the most, wins. But of course, it’s your choice! The possibilities are endless…

Edit 1: Cartoons and films are also a good inspiration too!
Edit 2: and game shows!

Thanks bro, I will try you advice as well

No problem bud, hope this helps!

I just realised that my suggestion ends up a little like among us…

Take a nice warm shower at 101 degrees and just think about anything.

Take to opposite genres and mush them together.

Find a really stupid game and try to make it better.

Ask me for a game idea, that’s my specialty!

And there you have it, 4 ways to get a new and original game idea.

Usually I get my inspiration from reading books.

If you don’t read books then watching videos and or movies is fine too.

To be honest I find myself having too many idea :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

There is several ways to come up with a good idea
but what several things I do to try getting a good game idea is this

  1. Combining 2 genres into 1
this is the simplest thing I (And possibly you) can do
so lets say you liked 2 genres, one of them is zombies and the other Fps games
combine those 2 and you would have an idea of a zombie Fps game, simple

  2. taking a look on how something works and making it into a game
now this is might possibly be a very good game idea, so lets say you are interested on how an airport terminal system works and wanting to make a game out of it, you would first get a basic idea on how the thing works (e.g: terminal system works by arranging planes and stuff bla bla bla and so on) and then try to find something that would be the core of your idea, (e.g: the player would try to arrange plane land and take off times) and there we go, you have a (possibly) good idea

  3. a sudden lightbulb on your head
as what it says, a sudden lightbulb in your head, what you would do after that is noting it down on a notepad or something else and writing it down, after that try to find what the core idea would be and noting that down too, and then you have an idea

Im sorry if there is any typo or wrong wording since english is not my first language

Hey that is not a bad idea, recently I watched that Space Jam 2 Movie, and I could try and replicate that Basketball Video game called Dom Ball or something, thanks a lot!

  1. Brainstorm ideas with friends or fellow game designers. Collaborating with others can help you generate and refine ideas.
  2. Look for inspiration in other games and media. Don’t be afraid to borrow ideas from other sources and make them your own.
  3. Keep it simple. It’s easy to get carried away with grandiose ideas, but it’s often best to start small and build from there.
  4. Be persistent and don’t be afraid to iterate. It’s normal for game ideas to evolve over time, and it may take several tries before you come up with a concept that really works.
  5. Make a prototype. Once you have a solid idea, start creating a prototype of your game using Roblox Studio. This will help you get a better understanding of how your game will work and what changes you might need to make.
  6. Test and iterate. Show your prototype to friends and family and get their feedback. Use this feedback to make improvements and changes to your game until you have a finished product that you’re happy with.
