Hello!
I am trying to find how to motivate myself to create a long-term project. I am not one who is often motivated by money, so that is out of the question.
I personally recommend reminding yourself constantly that you are an incredible builder - as evidenced in your work for redacted. To maintain a motivation, remember that the only obstacle in your way is yourself and that you’ve got to push past that boulder if you want to truly create something magical.
I just take a deep breath, take out my phone and begin discussing it with my friends or other devs. If they agree and say “Yeah sure that’s a good idea let’s get started!” I’ll get to work. Honestly, I think there is no other better way than to be motivated by teamwork.
All you need are good friends, and I’m lucky to have amazing ones.
But on the other side, if this is a solo project, I just try to contantly remind myself stuff like
“Hey dude, you know coding, not much people do y’know, keep up the good work!”
And that usually gives me a boost. But the thing is, actually mean it. Like don’t just say it, mean it.
And finally some other options that I use.
Think of all of the fun that the players will have!
Imagine all of the people you’ll make laugh!
Remember that there is no obstacle that you’ve got and that you might make the next most popular game!
And remember, nothing is stopping you.
I know that EVERYONE says that, but make something you like and will enjoy making, that way you’ll always have a goal. What I also do when I’m down is read some Roblox article (most of them are about the successful Roblox Devs or about Roblox’s growing platform), and that makes me want to finish my game even more to see it grow.
Only make a game of you know you can be dedicated to it. Making a game you do not want will most likely be unsuccessful.
If you think of front page games, they were all made by dedicated creators. You need to be willing to pay for good builders, and you need to have patience because it might take a while for the game to be released.
Having the correct mindset will help to. Getting to the front page is possible, you just need to be dedicated and have hopes for this game.
You should have good ideas on what you want for this game, not something rushed. The moral of the story is to motivate yourself, you need to think how far your game might come.
Put in your time and dedication, maybe even start earning robux so you can pay for high quality devs to work along side you.
I think you should invite your friends to work with you, this will make the project more fun and enjoyable.
My advice to you is to not give up on the game, even if you think it won’t get far. Dedicate your time and work into this game if it means so much to you to get far. It will be a long journey but you need to be dedicated to the decision you’re making.
I hope this helps and hopefully your game will be on the front page soon.
I have this problem a lot.
I can’t finish most projects, however, I recently started making games for my younger brother to enjoy, and found out that even if that one person plays it, it means that they found a game they love. The smile on my brothers face when playing my game made me make more and more!
Think about what you want, why you want it and finish it because of the reason you started it.
In my opinion, yes the motivation is hard, but getting your game popular is the hard part, without initial funding and capital it’s hard to get it off the ground, even if it is the next big thing and a scripting/building masterpiece but that’s just my personal opinion.
You could try to come up with a unique idea that stands out. As I’m saying this, I currently have a game that appears on the front page in the Top Rated section.
This is a great topic to discuss. But you need to use something that already motivates you to your advantage. And to stop getting tired of your projects work on multiple projects.
Motivation is extremely hard to hold onto, especially over long periods of time.
That being said there are a few things you can do that will help you while working on a project.
The first major thing is accepting you aren’t always going to be motivated. It is probably one of the hardest steps of working on something long-term, but it’s realizing that if you really want it, you’re going to have to work on it even when it is uncomfortable. By pushing yourself even when you might not be in the mood can show dedication to whatever project your making.
But, obviously, we don’t want you to suffer working on something so I recommend doing things you enjoy as you work on your project. For me, that’s listening to a lot of music I like, or talking to friends as I work. This can put you in a better mood when you’re working, and it can also relieve you from boredom (just don’t get distracted!).
Lastly, the final thing you can do (which I find most helpful), is whenever you feel like quitting, ask yourself why you’re quitting, and what the reason for quitting is. You probably find the answer to be something along the lines of “it’s never going to get popular” or “it’s a waste of time and I could be doing something else that is more fun”. Quit it, that’s the devil talk. Think about how by quitting all the work and time you put into it is just wasted. It’s better to finish than to just leave it. Usually, that’ll keep me working.
I’ve had some trouble with consistency in the past, I would work on a game for a month and then give up on it. A good way I found is to find a partner to work on the game with you. If you’re a builder, find a scripter partner, if you’re a scripter, find a builder partner, a good place to go to find one is #collaboration:recruitment, it’s always more fun when you’re working with a friend. Try to find someone that dosen’t demand top quality performance from you and 6 hours of work every day. Show off your progress on the dev forum. Whenever I complete a part of my game, I like to show it off in the cool creations category. It motivates me so much to see people say they like what I’ve worked on so hard. That’s pretty much all I’d like to add to this discussion.
Maybe try working on a game that is based around an activity or thing you like? If you are going to work on something for a long time, you should like the idea of the game. I’m saying this because I’m currently working on a game that’s about pancakes, and I really like pancakes (my name is literally Pancake1824) Although, for the first two updates, I was only updating once every 2 months but I’m hoping to get back on track with the next update which should come out tomorrow.
