How do you manage to make realistic builds?

Okay, I was kind of wondering how people make realistic builds and I wanted to ask you all!

Thank you for your answers.

From what I saw, a lot of realistic builds use textures! That should be the game-changing addition.

Realistic projects take a really long time, usually months if you don’t get help from someone. First thing I suggest trying is getting used to the lighting, or using some plugins for help with it. Try not to add free models, and mostly everything should be handmade, otherwise give credit to the person/people you took inspiration from.

As I’ve never tried to build a showcase myself, I can’t give you too many tips on how to actually make a successful one, but you should also look for some tutorials on youtube, get a few real life pictures for help (castles, forests, fairy lands, bridges that lead to the unknown etc).

Good luck!

Realistic builds take way longer than builds like low poly because of the immense amount of detail put into it. If you are committed to finishing a build then you can definitely do this, they use textures not just sand, concrete and bricks as those are not hyper-realistic.

Best of luck!

It really comes down to time and detail. If you put a lot of detail into a build and focus on real life inspiration or images then your build will turn out far more realistic.

Lighting is also a large way to incorporate realism into games. Aspects such as sun rays, blur, clock time and fog really help out in this regard.

Well it depends on the build.

There are a few qualities that make a realistic build.

You have the texture people, who go over-haul with photorealistic textures and just make the game look, wooow.
You have the people you like to layer a lot and use lots parts.
But then you have the “Gods”, they use textures that are amazing and use lots of parts.

Another thing that makes a realistic build is the layering. I and other devs I have seen, they use lots of layers, below is an example.

Layers

Those are the basics of a realistic build.

But then, a key part is decoration, you use lots of plugins to make wires, you use lots of decals to add dirt or other types of things. It is all based on what you are making.

Another key part is lighting, you can make a build look good but the lighting ruins it, you should try adding a blur effect, colour correction, atmosphere, bloom, basically all lighting effects.

Also, you need to think of real life, you should try and re create real life and try not to build from your imagination, you should use lots of references and sketches.

And that is what I think makes a realistic build.

Please search before posting. There are already many threads about attempting to make realistic builds how to accomplish it and what to use. In that regard though: technically there was just one posted just a few days ago that I have answered this before however what has been said above.

All you have to do is practice and learn is a part of improving, or learn how to accomplish these types of styles but there’s a lot of tips and suggestions and resources you can learn, from what has been suggested below to dive in that style people normally use textures and meshes to accomplish it wouldn’t take long if your trying to make photorealism builds or something simple at the start.

Even though this was solved, please make sure there isn’t no existing threads before posting a similar one because threads like this have been answered and solved. If you need tutorials simple resources there all plenty of threads that’ll help you along the way something you could use later down the line, at the start it’s all about practice if you really want to try that style at.
