How to improve low retention?

My anime tower defense has recently been getting really low retention, which has prevented it from getting into the algorithm. Around 2 months ago I sponsored it for a few days, and they didn’t do too well but about a week after the end of the sponsors my stats shot up and the game got into the algorithm. It ended up having a high of 200ccu and maintained 100 so I’m sure that the game has the potential to succeed, I’m just unsure why the retention is so low now. If anyone can check it out and let me know any issues I’d really appreciate it!
(If you’re wondering why it died, I had some personal issues and was unable to update it for 2 months)

side track from the original question. i see that the game doesn’t have a genre yet. you may fill it in first. then after one or two days your stats will have the updated benchmark that is your relevant genre.
you may find that the genre benchmarks are harsher than the “all experience benchmarks”. your metrics could now be dropped out of the quartile ranges, which means the original metrics was not reflecting the truth

did you setup a funnel to see where would they leave the game?
the game mechanics feel fine. just one question in my head, is it a survival? does it has an end? i quitted before I come to the reward screen (if there is one). If a player shared the same thought process, they probably won’t come back to this game because there is no reward (yet) and the core loop is not completed.

waste of time working on a game if after 1 month + after release with daily updates the game is not on the frontpage

Yea I just changed this, and thats the case. Does the algorithm work based off of genre or just in general? If that’s the case someone who falsely changed their genre or misclassified it could have to go up against statistics that are higher or lower than they actually should be. For my game after changing it the stats have dropped a lot compared to benchmarks.

Thanks for the ideas, I’ll set up a funnel. And yes the game does have an end, each round has 15 waves and then are rewarded.

The game used to get recommended a lot so I’m just tryna get back to that point. Also I think the front page is a bit harsh, a lot of successful games that make some money do it without reaching the front page.

Your game has definitely been pushed by the algorithm, it has 250k visits.

That really means nothing, ccu shouldn’t be like a metric that matters a lot, i seen games go from 1000ccu (no ads) to 30ccu in a few days.

GL on making your game recover from its death… You’ll need it

It has been pushed by the algorithm, but just not anymore, even though I’ve sponsored it with like 50k. It previously only took 20k for it to get to that point. Also thanks

In my humble opinion, you should stop putting robux to your game…

yea I stopped putting anything into it a while ago, I spread the 50k over a week to see what would happen but not much luck

I assume that you have lost money with this project right?

Not at all, I profit 1k usd, some cause of just robux I’ve made from the game and some from percent I’ve sold. Its not much comparatively but I definitely wouldn’t say it was a loss

Yeah, just abandon that project.

after long period of time, you may need to sponsor for 2 weeks again for the algorithm to pick it up. so 1 more week to go if you have already doing it for a week.

quickly analysis the old data like retention and session time, impression ctr and details ctr. try to improve the metrics so when the HR coming, it will see better stats

Its already past that point… I stopped sponsoring over a week ago. The reason I stopped is cause of the retention though, if its too low then it will never get into the algorithm. I’m just wondering how to fix it

oh in that case, move on to the other project.
at least you should learn something from this experience.

what is “low retention” here? what is yours compared to the benchmarks?
in the funnel, where do they drop out?

it would be more brain power to help you analyse what is going on if you have more information to share.

as i played the game, the first stage is boring. i expect the enemies maybe more recognisable to fit in the dragonball theme. but it doesnt seem to be the case.

not much differentiation between waves of enemies. they are just tougher but when i upgrade my “turrets” the enemy just die quickly.

i feel Gon is much more useful than Goku. if the first two turrets are very similar in function, but already 50% of them is inferior, god knows what the other turrets would be.

if the display shows a Wave 10/15 i may stay to the reward screen because i am already passed half way, and i will decide if i want to continue. without the /15 i quitted because it feel like endless survival of enduring the boring stage.

it is just my opinion. maybe the stat would show a very different picture (which it often does). so we cannot advise how to “fix” it with blind guessing

Good thing you profited, now forget about this game and make another, or take some months to do a huge update
