I’m gonna make a voxel game like minecraft, but first I gotta know one question.
Even if I had my own textures and everything, would this be a violation of copyright?
It would have building, creative and survival. But I think this might be too much like Minecraft…
As long as you have your own textures, ideas, and a form of uniqueness, or obvious differences, I think there’s no issue.
Mojang/Microsoft hasn’t copyrighted the idea of building shelter to survive, nor has it copyrighted pixelated games.
You should be fine, as your game is mostly inspired by minecraft and doesn’t reuse textures and/or assets. Even then, blatant rip-off games of minecraft, using minecraft textures, sometimes even named “Minecraft” exist on the Roblox website. Most of these games fail because they don’t present anything that minecraft doesn’t already have.
I don’t think Mojang/Microsoft really cares about rip-offs or closely-inspired games anyway since their game is successful enough. There’s a small chance Microsoft will care if your game becomes super successful, but I wouldn’t worry too much because at least it’s not Nintendo.
There’s actually a game on Roblox that went too far, taking the name of a Minecraft expansion as its own. It would be impossible to make a game that has nothing in common with any other game. My game is inspired by a 1989 game I hope everyone has forgotten!
Just make your own game. Pigs aren’t copywrite protected, but you shouldn’t copy that particular pig.
“Inspired by Minecraft” would be like adding a blocky terrain and small things.
“Copied from Minecraft” would be like adding every single tool that Minecraft has, or the same exact inventory system, the same mobs, etc.
Remember, you can’t copyright an idea because that falls under Fair Use. But Microsoft can strike you for copyright infringement if its obvious that you directly copied stuff from the game.
