Is this normal?

What is the game called ? I would love to check it out :slightly_smiling_face:

If your game has good enough retention rates and play length time, you wont have to spend a single dime in advertising as roblox will automatically boost it. same case with cj over’s games and some others, he did not spend a single dime and it became one of the most popular games in those times. Like I said, advertising should only start your engagement engine, let me explain this engine in more detail. There are 2 types of loops in game design, balance loops and reinforcement loops. An example of a reinforcement loop is you advertising your game, which as a result, increases your concurrent players, which as a result, gets boosted to the algorithm, which as a result, people look at the game and see people playing which makes them join, which as a result, increases your concurrent players. If it was not for balance loops, every person on earth will eventually play your game. <90% of a games concurrent number should be entirely new people. There are a name for these type of people. They are called discovery players, and they come mainly from 3 things. 1. The roblox algo 2. influencers 3. word of mouth. A few more tips because why not. There is also another huge reinforcement loop, idk what to call it so I’m gonna call it the task loop. This is your players: task pursuit rate (the rate of players at which they realize the goal) → task attempt rate (rate of players that attempt the goal) → task survival rate, this loop provides a premise of not only how round/grind based games are. This also apply to other types of games, as long as the game has 3 gaming mentalities in them, which is: Experience side, Social side, Survival side. If you measure anything important connected to this task loop, you can almost always find a correlation in there if you see a discrepancy. Low retention rate? look at the data, it seems players have a low task survival rate for this goal, I should make the goal easier. This is the main reason why developers fail. there are 3 columns to roblox indie game development, the experience side, the business side, and the marketing side. Too many focus entirely on the experience side of the game, not focusing a single second on the other 2 sides. A stool with 1 leg will collapse. Devs are loosing hope, thinking this is not a source of money, you can’t make money, you can’t get games popular, its all “luck”. No, its all mostly purely calculable. Collecting data for your game is so important if you want to get it popular or improve it. I have been trying for like 7 years to make a game and they were all mess ups, except for the one I recently made, which is still kind of bad because I did not know this much during the making of it. I only know what I know because I was taught this by someone who spent much more time in this than me, and went through more pain and suffering. Don’t give me credit for this, this is a conglomerate of things I’ve found online. I have yet to make a entire game applying this entire knowledge, thats how recent I have learned this (or maybe I’m just coping).

Also, sponsored ads are generally worse than advertising ads, the ones with banners and skyscrapers. Unless your target audience is mainly mobile players. From what I know, sponsored ads does not really provide a lot of good data and it’s weird, like it shows people that have ignored the sponsor but clicked on it later. Sponsors show it to more people but your ctr is nerfed compared to ads.

Another tip because I feel like it. Usually there are 2 types of games in the gaming industry, linear games and systemic/dynamic games. As you may guess from these names, linear games such as the last of us or world of warcraft are linear, have a story line (that may or may not branch). Systemic games such as chess, or natural disaster, or overwatch are examples of that, mechanics which are random which can have its output be the input of other mechanics, and the output of that mechanic goes into the input of the first mechanic, things like that. Usually, systemic games perform better at nearly every metric than linear games. For example lets take last of us and overwatch. overwatch was like 10 mil to make, and it made like 1.5 billion. last of us took 100 million, and it made 1 billion. it is still a lot of money, but it is dramatically less. Systemic games are cheaper, more sustainable and has higher retention, and linear games has lower retention, lower play length times. However, linear games usually have more people playing at release than systemic games. It is because it is easier to market, having premade cutscenes in ads of actual gameplay footage, and other factors that can be used in marketing in that is not present in systemic games.

Also, speaking of maps, a lot of game devs make the common mistake of making it too big. Just make sure your map size is not too big for the amount of people in your server. As you see, any tiny increase or decrease in retention can dramatically increase or decrease player numbers, try everything you can to improve and increase factors in your game to increase retention.

Good luck again. If someone random guy finds this thread, this will be liquid gold. Sorry for the rant or any grammar mistakes, its 4 am, its all informative though and I hope it can clear up even more potential confusion and questions.

ALSO, PLEASE DONT FORGET TO MARK MY PREVIOUS ASNWER AS THE CORRECT ANSWER, CUS IT IS. PLS.

#writtenwithChatGPT everybody! But now that I think of it it seems like #writtenwithChatGPT, is it?

You guys can probably check it with that one website that checks if things is written by chat gpt and it will probably detect that my writing is human. Not once did I use chat gpt in that, besides, I probably have some grammar errors in there, AND there is no way chat gpt can know all that. Chat gpt can’t store things analytically over time and watch videos and talk to other people to formulate that. I guess I’d have to take it as a compliment if you think my research and writing was equivalent to an artificial intelligence. Also, I don’t know if chat gpt can replicate my slang which is apparent across all my posts. Im sure you can find very common slang I use repeatedly and common sentence structures that I use ubiquitously.

Yea, also I don’t even think ChatGPT should be used, it’s a feat source, yes, but it seems kind of ‘useless’ to me, if you get what I mean

it doesn’t even have access to current data until 2021. Also its code writing skill is horrible. It’s very flawed. Everything still will eventually be replaced by it. But you can use you.com/chat if you want an online version or bing which also an online version. I don’t get all the hype around bing, its just the same as you.com/chat with a little more integration, they both have access to the internet and their making a big deal with it. Anyways this is getting off topic so lets stop talking about ai right about here.
