New Sponsored Items and Updated Ad Audiences

unfortunately nobody has aged as a result of this change

Hoping for better discovery and maybe more targeted advertising, but this is good motivation to move off platform for advertising

This is probably one of the worst updates ever. Developers loose a ton of revenue because their ads reaches less people and only a specific audience, please do not implement this update.

Why is there gender specific ads; seems kinda weird that non-binary and other lgbt people will have to pick their favorite gender to see ads for.

From what I know, when you sign up on Roblox, you are given 2 gender options: male and female. I’m pretty sure there’s also a non binary option as well. The same in settings as gender is optional on Roblox.

Roblox probably included male and female only as the majority of users are that gender. Non-binary and others are a small percentage which is why Roblox made the “Any” option, to lump in every gender.

Just my thoughts.

Unfortunately, they already did. They gave us no warning and didn’t ask us for feedback.

Its not just small developers losing out, Big ones too. I’ve lost an easy way to advertise to millions of people in my target demographic, now I have to pay 250k robux for a youtuber to play, for 1/2 of the players. This is honestly the worst change roblox has ever made, and will put more money in OTHER PEOPLES POCKETS rather than ROBLOX’S POCKETS!!! We will be paying YOUTUBERS to play our games, and not spending A PENNY on sponsorships. Overall Roblox will feel a big hit from this, as more people will be cashing out their robux than spending it on the stupid new sponsors.

I and my team create games targeting younger audiences. This update effectively kills us, and there is no mention of an alternative way to present our games to the <13 player base, which makes up half of the platform. This having been done without any prior notice is also a setback, as we’ve had a project under development for weeks that would be coming out soon.

This change must be reverted as soon as possible. We spend thousands of Dollars on sponsors every week, and losing half our reach at a finger snap like this may force us to turn to other options as Roblox may have just lost its profitability for us.

One of my most clicked group Ad was actually players under 13. My game was made for kids under 13 and ads typically helped me and my team reach more group members. I’m not really sure what 13+ is gonna wanna play a game designed for litter kids.

This change only benefits large companies and YouTubers, although not a change implemented to “benefit” us, it would have been nice to be provided an alternative to the already insane prices of YouTubers. Promoting to u13’s wasnt easy anyways, as their average play time is lower; Roblox have just made it much harder.

Doesn’t this just leave games targetted at children with less discoverability?
This risks potentially killing off any family friendly games, doesn’t it?

Thank you for making my CTR even less than 0.03%!

This is a personally a bad update for the Sponsored Advertisements. Many people who use sponsored advertisements will use the -13 option, even I do.

I had a game coming up, a waterpark to be exact. If you think about it, about 80% of the users in a waterpark style game are -13, it’s not often you find someone +13 in there unless it’s an actual group where you can hire staff, and actually become a higher rank there.

I personally think removing this won’t help for the developers on the game, but it also removes so many games for those who are -13. I use this option very often, so removing this won’t give much attention to the future games I had planned, and the future games people had planned which would use the -13 option.

Ads are officially dead. Only corporations or exceptional games will get traction.

Congrats Roblox, you’ve ruined the experience for indie devs completely! Time for indie devs to go work for a corporate boss on the talent hub!

Dear Roblox,

Are you going to practice the same advertising restrictions yourself that you are requiring your developers to follow?

  • Is Roblox going to stop advertising to under 13 year olds on the App Store?
  • Is Roblox going to stop advertising to under 13 year olds on the Google Play Store?
  • … on YouTube?
  • … on TikTok?
  • … on Twitter?
  • … etc.
  • Is Roblox going to require all its many external business partners to stop advertising to under 13 year olds as well?

I understand what the reasons may be for removing ads for <13 users, but I feel that Roblox has gone about this awfully.

The discoverability on Roblox has sucked for years now, and despite members of the community regularly asking for it and telling you this, it’s rarely ever addressed by Roblox, let alone Roblox offering some sort of solution to the obvious problem. Then this change comes out of the blue with no prior warning, and you outwardly say without hiding it that it will impact discoverability of the (likely small) developers that relied on sponsorships or ads and yet you still don’t offer a solution or future change that will give those developers that discoverability back.

So with no discoverability, what are small developers that want to make kid friendly games for an <13 audience to do? Is this their cue to jump platforms and make their game somewhere else that supports indie developers that wish to make those games?

I think as sad as it is to say, at this point using Roblox’s in-game chat system to advertise your game is probably going to reach more people than paying for discoverability, which says a lot.

Majority of small devs wouldn’t get a benefit even if this change wasn’t planned, because there’s always been scammers that had a bunch of Robux they got from dirty methods, and they won’t care about how much they pay into sponsorships, because their robux was barely worked, so they would pay something like 10k-20k and use some flashy icon + thumbnail to get underage users’ attention with it. The other, smaller games made by passionate devs wouldn’t stand a chance if the developer barely has any robux to pay for the sponsorship.

It can’t be legally done due to data privacy laws for children under the age of 13. Both COPPA and the EU would take action against such a feat.

I think that was pretty much the point now that I think about it. Children are more impressionable, so it’s easier to gather their attention through ads; the official, corporate-backed events gather more funding than a % of a developer’s revenue. In short, they most likely only want the easy audience for themselves.

I have no words waking up this morning to this announcement. This is going to COMPLETELY destroy most, if not all game’s chances to reach a younger audience. I have mixed opinions on this update, which I will be sharing now

It is AWFUL from a developer standpoint. As a Roblox developer, how am I supposed to reach a younger audience? This update single handedly stopped any games that WOULD have a shot with the younger generations succeed, and has completely killed off any chances of continued success for games that are already popular with younger generations, as they are now stuck with their current audiences. It seems like you made this change because we now have to spend double what we currently throw into advertisements, but it will result in less money. This is because developers who develop games for younger generations now have to resort to YouTubers, TikTokers, and sponsorships and payments outside of Roblox to even have a chance of success.

I created myself a Roblox game called Pan Smashing Simulator. Based on the name itself, you can see that is directly geared to a younger audience. What am I supposed to do? I don’t know why this update would be released so suddenly, but I can technically see the moral viewpoint behind all this.

First off, I believe that it is amazing that we can now sponsor UGC items. It will greatly help UGC creators (assuming they make items for people 13+!)

I can see why they would do this. The FTC and all these government agencies around the globe are becoming heavily focused on child safety as technology, social media, and more platforms online are heavily increasing in usage among children, which I can understand. However, I am unsure if Roblox is doing this for the right reasons. I’m a teenager myself, and I will admit, there aren’t any options online that would give us the right to express our creativity freely while also being safe. Being safe would mean giving up all creativity efforts in total, preventing many of us from becoming successful in the current day and age, as many people in Gen Z and Alpha have many bright ideas. Pls Donate, a famous Donation game on Roblox we probably have all heard about, was created by a 15 year old.

I also wanted to ask, how will this affect Roblox sponsorships? If you keep sponsoring to under 13 the Roblox “events” such as Spotify Island and Walmart Land, but prevent developers from expressing creativity to the masses, well. This is a problem

Besides, who is more likely to click on ads? Teenagers, or children? Not to sound bad, but kids do love clicking ads that look interesting to them, while teenagers like myself are the hardest to capture

This is a truly tragic and horrific day for the Roblox developer community, as all of us have been silenced in terms of our creativity efforts. My hearts are with those who were so close to releasing a game geared for children and then reading this current announcement. I’m sorry Roblox cut off more than half of your target audience.

Unbelievable
