New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

When you say proceed, do you mean in terms of choosing whether or not to continue to allow usage of the old materials, or do you mean modifying the new ones? If you don’t have a concrete answer that’s fine, but if this hard-push for the materials is staying, I’d rather not get my hopes up by mistake.

personally I can see this working, although maybe a few changes regarding tiling and seams but it could be a right step.

no, the blue channel of a normal map is not used for ambient occlusion. for tangent space normal maps which Roblox and basically everything uses, the blue channel can be generated by the engine.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for the clarification.

Lmao you’re the 1000th post, is it me or it feels almost like 500 posts were about making this optional?

Not trying to be mean here, however, the fact that this thread has accumulated over 1000 replies in almost a day since being announced proves to me that the majority of the community do not support, nor agree, with the decision that has currently been taken, and we strongly recommend a change in direction sooner rather than later, before the damage is done.

After hours of work fixing the aesthetic of a game, I have some feed back.

Pros

  • I appreciate the increased range of colors we can now reach with some materials such as fabric.
  • The new materials are welcomed additions.
  • some of the materials are improvements from the previous in my opinion. Examples include Wood planks, wood, and concreate.

Cons

  • The new grass material looks like slate and contains a clearly repeating pattern. As a result it feels more artificial and hard. I need something that looks more soft and friendly. If anyone has found a good work around for the new grass, please mention it.
  • Some materials have intense contrast / depth / shading resulting in the eye to be drawn toward the material rather than what I want the player to focus on. Whenever using sand I find myself in a battle to compete for the player’s attention. A good example posted by @MrCurt
The new sand draws your eyes to the ground. This shouldn’t be where the player’s eyes should be going. If you notice how your eyes tend to get stuck looking at the ground in the second image, that’s what I’m trying to explain here. If this could be tuned back to have less contrast, similar to the older sand, it would make a huge difference.
  • Games that provide players the chance to build their own creations have no easy way to recover their desired aesthetic. A game I currently work on, Build a Boat for treasure, currently applies to this issue. What will happen to these games when they find out their boat went from:

    To:

This would negatively affect the game’s community. I’m unable to help keep the aesthetic of any build due to how players have full control over the color and material of each block they use. Below are a few amazing creations of dedicated players who might be faced with the decision to rebuild their creation or quit.

I’m sure this change will affect other building games such as Bloxburg and lumber tycoon 2.

  • We must adapt our development schedule to fix our aesthetic when we should be focusing on developing content. It’s an understatement to say this is barley an inconvenience. Maybe a good compromise would be to keep the old grass, sand, and slate since these are the most commonly used materials. Or tweak them to look closer to the original. Something to lift the work load off our back.

Any “toggle” option should be ignored and replaced by simultaneously having both sets side by side, since it’s all in one folder.

I’m also going to add that I’ve never ever seen such fast replying from the Roblox community. I wonder if we broke a record tbh.

However, this implies a very strong reaction to the new materials. Something MUST be done.

WoodGrain2
I build organs, and I’d love to see a less intense wood texture, the old one worked well for this purpose, but I feel the new one simply doesn’t work for this situation. Are we only getting new versions of the textures we already had or additional ones too?

Edit: it seems i can’t read, the initial post states that they’re adding more.

Honestly, the sand in that picture looks absolutely beautiful, the pronounced normal map just works for that lighting.

Couldn’t agree even more!

People are not trying to change anything. All they’re doing are simply opening studio, and turning up their graphics with the new materials.

If I can make a very nice looking cabin with these textures, I’m sure you can make a very good adjustment to make your build stand out.

I wish people took the time to give things a chance.

Please see this post before going off: New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build - #591 by Sio_Fi

so all this for nothing??? Awesome

for people saying to keep the old materials along with the new ones. I’m sorry. But we still have a chance (and switching roblox texture files to get the old ones which work only on your view) of getting them in still

Let me explain something, I know I do a lot of fe2 references to get my point across, but look at every fe2 map in general. Wild savannah and other maps using a mix of grass and slate will turn into plastic. Maps like Familiar ruins will turn practically blue because of the corroded metal update. And most importantly, I am worried about SNOW.

Like Snowy Peaks, any people use white sand to convey a snow texture, since there is no good alternative. I ask you, what will snow with that texture look like? not like snow. I get you could replace some textures with more fitting textures, but sadly many things like snow will now be worthless.

TLDR This update should be optional, and have settings to turn it on like other people suggested, and not be forced, for it can ruin many, MANY games.

(also I love how you are trying to make things realistic meanwhile the grass, slate, and brick now look like things you would find in a low-poly roleplay game)

woah, you made sand actually work for the bed
people were complaining about sand looking bad on that, but no it looks good on it

finally a FE2 fan

ok aside from that. Usually maps in FE2 have a certain style for materials. Whenever I look at one of my cm maps with the new materials. They just don’t fit the style. I can always improve the material choices to get a bit closer to the original

Exactly my point! Lighting, and the materials go hand in hand. You cannot expect things to look good with engine updates all the time. If you open up, take some time to do some editing (although I know recoloring tons of parts are a pain but there are plugins to fix that) you can make something look really good.

The sand texture makes the bed look untidy, which still looks really good IMO. Doesn’t look that bad with shadow map either:

Definitely “in love” with the new materials!!! Must fit my game perfectly!
I also decided to help the upcoming project by contributing my own texture, I call this lovely texture “New Sand V2”

Looks awesome! Love ROBLOX

another thing to mention, the way this has gone just tells me the promised material customization is going to be mediocre at best. This release still has the same old opaque ‘one size fits all’ mentality Roblox has been on since the beginning, and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon.
