This is a wasteful idea at best. If you have both textures in the files, why not allow us to use both simultaneously?
I mistook it lol.
Both of them are quite bad in my opinion as well. Countless people have pointed out the new sand is too noisy, and grass should look a lot more like terrain grass with decorations on.
It’s not serious unlike how it used to be, I remember using build v1 and my grey wood was brown, and the yellow bricks were orange because of the reddening.
How do I do that on a blank meshpart though?
This is not an alternative. Using decals or anything related that force you to manually set a face (only one & not multiple) in place of a material is incredibly costly and not performant for users.
I moved over to Unreal a bit ago. There’s stuff out there that mimic auto-scaling servers so, it’s not really as hard as it was before. I definitely make much more money and the games look graphically better if you write a cool shader.
I think that Roblox is limited by their whole “restrictive policy” and their unwillingness to marginally recognize third-party is what is actually killing them and forcing experienced developers away. Also, the licensing of other game engines since the pandemic have gotten significantly better and are as low risk as Roblox.
The only thing is the audience. It’s much harder I’m the real world than on Roblox. Roblox could really be something great and versatile but, certain things that they formulate seems so out of tune with what developers need.
they are adding extended materials after that because of how the materials are specialized. go back to the original December announcement
This is awesome its very cool to see how far Roblox has come throughout the years and even months!
I absolutely love the new wood texture
Decals aren’t expensive at all. They only lag if you have thousands of them in a small space.
I also meant SurfaceAppearance, which a Roblox staff has said is even more performant and it’s equally as performant as using a material anyway.
Personally I’ve actually been thinking of moving to UE5 for a while. It’s to the extent that I’m reading Unreal Documentation on UE4 to try and understand it, such as directional lights, skylights etc.
I agree that the benefits of staying at Roblox are lower than ever now though.
The only issue is that most of the stuff I do in Studio is comissions, whereas I can’t do comissions with UE. Correct me if I’m wrong.
If they force bad things like forcing this materials update they’ll lose money anyway.
You should also add that these new materials are phase 1, phase 2 is those extended materials, but phase 3 is a secret…
I think phase 3 is going to be something amazing, someone guessed it would be adding custom materials altogether. However, only time will tell.
custom materials are already added you just can’t see them in the roblox player yet. So it is probaly even more materials
SurfaceAppearance is for meshes and not only is the performance shockingly poor, but there is no way of tiling the textures. There is no way AT ALL of making custom materials currently.
They are not “already added”.
Incorrect. I was referring to proper custom materials, such as extra tabs after tge existing materials tab, as opposed to the limited SurfaceAppearance feature we currently have.
I’m ticked off mainly because there is no good leaf material now. It used to be grass but now it actually looks like grass. I’m also mad because it’s ruining a lot of old games.
Tl;dr: Thanks for the feedback but we already wasted like 7 months on this update so we’re gonna force it on all of you anyway
try the new sandstone but change the colour to a grey tone, might look okay?
It’s probably not going to be forced. They have a chance to change it in favor of optionality.
I’ve seen Floren in Discord try to replace the cobblestone with a useful material, there is no such thing as a good replacement for it. Pavement is the closest thing and it’s nowhere near.
really too bad, I hope custom textures are a thing soon
