I think we are one of the only people that doesn’t know how to open it.
Yes, I think so. I was slightly embarrassed to ask anyone for help
Edit: I like the new textures, but some of them could be better. I think I will probably get used to it when it’s released though!
I agree on this one the grass texture is bad, I usually use that texture for trees.
One issue I have noticed is the fact that some of the terrain textures are more oriented towards being used as paths instead of physical parts (i.e. the differences in the brick texture). Is there a way to have both textures exist or will they have to be merged regardless? The terrain brick texture ruins some aesthetics of builds with the sizing differences and scaling of the bricks. Also, bright blue bricks is virtually black.
Also, the new textures being added when you change their color, it is just coloring over the texture, making some textures unrecognizable after being colored. The coloring of corroded metal is a mess as-well in terms of texture coloring and resolutions. The resolutions of textures are nowhere near uniform.
Also, will glass material be fixed to where we can see textures through it finally?
Oh NO!
New Terrain and Parts Materials Preview Build! Oh noes!
This might ruin some older games who use lighting exactly for the game. Please don’t just overwrite it. Save it as a different one, please.
No you’re not lol…
how do you open it again?
Instead of this update it would be handy if we just can custom the terrain by it self.
I want to custom my terrain texture so I can have something like this.
Is that unturned by any chance?
Yes it is I want to make something unturned styled but thats hard with the current terrain and the future terrain.
These materials are insanely inconsistent and most of them are outright downgrades compared to the materials we already have. I take it that this is just a early build but I hope this isn’t integrated until we have an equal level of quality among all the materials. It also completely destroys the current aesthetic of most games. I hope if these are implemented we have the choice of using the older materials in their place.
Pretty sure they announced this as a future feature at RDC, I’m also waiting for this!
I don’t know how to put my feelings into words about how this fundamentally ruins anything and everything I’ve made on this platform.
Don’t get me wrong, these textures would be great for some people and do look amazing. But Existing builds depending on how they are made, are completely ruined over this.
I was Hyped up for this just to be let down seeing all my work and others I work with end up looking not as great as it once was in my eyes, the styles of the texture conflit across the board, some looking cartoony while others realistic. I’m going to be posting Photos of before and after’s of games and projects I’ve worked and been working on for the past year and Honestly I only see this as a downgrade overall.
I’m on My knees Begging that this is at least something that Devs can chose between. Put these up as separate textures we can chose in the texture library while still allowing us to use older ones.
Edit: so In total this is what I have to say.
No this Is not good what so ever. This should be something that should be selectable as a Classic Look Of textures Or Added onto the texture library that we currently have as other varients.
The new Materials Lose the Color variety that we once had. When you could make two textures work together now there is baked in color along with it just not being usable with the older version of textures. Builders and modelers now no-longer have the Freedom the once did.
No, it doesn’t blend well at all. After showing the changes to a couple community members they feel as if they are taken out of the experience more by them than being immersed more.
I didn’t notice many problems apart from some of the textures being very visibly tiled and brick sometimes repeating its’self overtop.
Like I stated above, after showing off some before and after’s to some community members of mine, they feel taken away from the experience that they could have just by the few textures that have changed. losing Immersion Completely.
Here are Before and After’s For some stuff I’ve worked on. along with others

I’ve checked out much of the new textures; and how they affect the games that I’ve developed on.
Before getting into any of that; the initial post made me think that it would be possible to compile texture libraries to be used within your own games, potentially allowing community creation of sets for all types of styles and themes for a game. Because as it stands many people may wish to have a choice in using what is basically a legacy set of textures, or newly released textures if this is much of what we see in the end product.
With that aside, I share much of the same regards as @Ahlvie
Whilst the game still holds up structurally in most places; many stylistic choices around the overall theme of the game and subsequent use textures are no longer viable and would call for large chunks of work to be completely repassed; For me one of my larger issues at hand is with blending structures into terrain, some textures seem a stones throw away from others when mixed together.

I am hyped for the release of this, but how will performance be? will it be laggier because of the quality, or will it depend on the graphic settings?
Agree many people are saying that they should be one style.
However i think the solution could be a property which would say if you want legacy, realistic,or stylized.
This would make everyone happy if they didn’t like the new materials for terrain.
This is an update that i’ve been waiting for, for very long ! But, I tried it, and I was a bit disapointed about some of those textures. For example, there is a big quality difference between some textures, making some of those trashy. Here is a pavement and corroded metal. Corroded metal looks like a low quality texture, instead of pavement.
The pebble texture is definitely better, but there should be a variation so we can use it both in decoration AND terrain. This one looks like melted with concrete, not very good to make a pebble beach ;
You could add another pebble texture at the same time that will look more like this ;
I was expecting some terrain decoration on other textures as well, or probably a decoration brush for terrain, which you can switch between different decorations such as grass, leaves, some flowers as well …
I still notice that some textures got a good transition. That’s a really good point.
In fact, I think that this update could be better if you let the old textures and add those as complementary textures, instead of replacing. A cool thing could be to change the alpha of the texture in studio as well, so we can use our proper textures.
These materials look way too realistic for our game in specific. While it would be fantastic for showcases, it ruins the cartoony aesthetic that some of us strive for on the platform.
I really like the idea of having things like blending terrain materials and part materials, but the hyper realism of the materials does not play out well for those of us going for a more cartoony style.
My suggestion would be to allow developers to pick and choose which terrain textures and part textures they use for their game individually, or to just have a button that changes between the old and new materials.
In addition, a few nitpicky (but important) things I noticed:
- Almost ALL materials require color changing to get back to their original value. While this is not important for developers with small maps, for those of us with large crazy sized maps, this is a HUGE problem. It isn’t a good idea to have all developers have to fiddle with values for every single part because it will create a huge amount of time wasted.
- The new grass material does not have grass parts that are consistent with the texture below (see images). The texture below the grass is significantly brighter which breaks the realism.
