Next Gen Explorer Beta: Performance and Quality Improvements

I know I said this before, but just wanted to see if you guys were considering it. Do you think we can get the option to customize the spacing between services and instances in the explorer?

We’re aware of dissatisfaction with the padding. I don’t know what the result will be in the end though.

I do have 0.7 now (complete with the less dark dark theme) but I still can’t assign the Value property of an ObjectValue to anything. The other issue you mentioned appears to be fixed though.

Hey, hit me with those suggestions ASAP!

I love the changes I did notice that there was a few things missing from the old explorer.

  1. when holding down the control key it no longer goes faster,
  2. the save to local plugin button has not been added.

Other than that these changes are amazing.

Gah, I see this too. Will look into it right away and see if we can fix it soon.

In that case (I’ve touched upon this briefly in a general thread, but I believe delving deeper will be helpful),

As a UI Designer, I frequently need to transfer UIs from deep-hidden folders within replicated storage to StarterGUI to edit them.

Additionally, I’m aware that we store all our vehicle models in specific folders nestled deep within various aspects of the game. While we do have folders, there are numerous of them so finding the top used ones is a chore.

My recommendation would be to enable the ability to favourite these folders or at least reduce the inconvenience of searching through extensive files. The convenience of quickly moving these items between predefined favourited locations would be great! (or any other solution to this workflow would be welcomed)

Search Workspace based on selected part

Being able to have your suggested properties adapt based on what you’re selecting would be insane e.g. I’m selecting a red part it should give me a suggestion in the search to find ALL the red parts!

I feel as if a plugin would probably function better for this type of stuff than the explorer itself.

Update: Figured out what caused this. Fix hopefully tomorrow.

Disagree. Plugins require docking space in what can sometimes be an already cluttered workflow.

I also don’t know if this is niche enough to require a plugin.

How would favoriting things even be implemented into the explorer? What would it do, select the favorited object? Would you be able to find these in a special “service” while still having it parented to replicatedstorage or something?

I don’t understand how something like this would work built into the explorer.

One idea is a separate view that shows you favorited instances (or folders) in a separate tab, albeit in a vacuum.

Pros: Blocking out noise and viewing the instances you care about

Cons: Lose context and functionality from not seeing the rest of your hierarchy, and not being able to move it around a hierarchy without flipping back to the global view of Explorer.

There are probably tons of ways to achieve it, and it’ll be our job to figure out if they’re worth the drawbacks.

Here’s something I thought of. It’d be nice if you could drag across multiple closed chevrons to open them up.

Right now, it only opens the first:

Software like Blender implements this “multiple open” feature, which I like when I’m trying to get an overview of a set of items:

Just at the top and can be collapsable that just has whatever you want there to easily access and move between!

It could also integrate with the custom tabs as different workflows involve might different folders

Can’t help but notice the hover text that explains what each button does is gone. This would be useful for beginners to know what they do. It took me a hella long time to figure out about the Select All Matches button (I thought Ctrl + A just selected everything in the workspace for the longest time!)

I see, this is what I was thinking of. I believe this is a good idea too.

Just to confirm

  • If they’re in the “favorites” holder, will they still really be parented to a service such as ReplicatedStorage?
  • If you move them from favorites to another service, will they still stay in favorites but move the real service from ReplicatedStorage to (as an example) ServerStorage?

Hello!
Thanks for bringing this up, and we actually have captured this too.
We are looking into a fix to it.

Exactly! It’s just an reference/pointer to a folder located somewhere else

Can we please have back Select Children and Select Parents?

Love the new upgrades, however I would love it if there was an option or was set by default for the + icon to stay beside the name of the object. I’ve had that muscle memory stay there for years already and I constantly forget it isn’t there anymore.

(Edit)
Another thing I had noticed is the insert menu sets itself on the top left corner
I assume it’s a bug, probably already known, but I gotta complain just in case :joy:

Thank you for confirming you got the feedback! I’ll continue to look for issues I find with the new Explorer.

Just putting this here because I thought it would be useful to me, the hierarchy lines disappear when you aren’t hovering over the explorer.

I feel like it would be useful to have the option for the lines to stay no matter what, although I see why this was done.
