Poll: Are you getting value from comments?

Thanks for the poll replies and discussion. To summarize what I think you’re saying…

  • As a developer you value feedback and bug reports from players or buyers of your products
  • As a player or buyer you want to see high quality reviews before you play or buy something
  • The comments system works up to a point, after which the volume and quality of the comments makes it unusable
  • You want more control over how feedback, discussions, and reviews are presented on your games and products

Does that sound about right?

FYI: The suggestions for group/game forums are definitely being read.

Yep – that sounds dead on the mark. As I mentioned earlier the Talos Principle did a thing where people could report bugs with the click of a button (since a lot of bugs go unreported when people don’t feel like putting forth the effort to report them). Since we’re on the topic of bug reports, something you could add to the topbar would be a “Report bug” button and it allows the user to type in a short description of the bug and takes a screenshot of their screen. I don’t how they should be handled after they’re submitted, but I’d at least want some way to retrieve them from studio and filter through them manually to filter out reports by certain users I’ve marked as bad and reports that have certain keywords. I’d imagine that’d be less on your plate than entire forums for specific groups/games.

Comments are useful to a point. They’re really convenient and easy. They suck once the game gets popular because everyone wants to feed off of its popularity through the comments section. I recommend a toggle in a place’s configure page to turn on when the owner decides the comments aren’t clean enough, to enable a more advanced version of the comments section which doesn’t evolve into this problem.

They’re actually quite useful, even though I never communicate through them, they do offer so much feedback you’d otherwise never get, may it be positive or negative. Because it’s so informal and easy to place a comment, people are probably more inclined to do so.
The spam seriously hurts it, though, which is why I resort back to messages for game comments. For gamepass comments it’s a good value-costs indicator and a way to gain trust of other potential buyers, spam doesn’t seem to hit it as badly.

And as a player, they serve as a place to get caught up to date with what everyone is doing/ a discussion (not entirely about the game’s development)

Like say someone got a new power, or everyone’s starting a war on a certain island or something, or a crew is falling apart/ rallying up. Comments and group walls are the best place to do it. Comments work as a “crossroads” for players.

Just try to view it from a non “Developer orientated” point of view, because if it’s not treated in a way players would like to take part in, that right there is a load of useful traffic through that venue gone.

Most of my content is created for clan places, but this still applies to other content that I create.

Most of the time the comments section of assets that I create is filled with spam and “fisrt!!!” “secnod!!!” “no i called 1st!!” and the like. When there is a comment that is actually related to the asset, it is generally just a troll saying “this is just crap” or a user saying “you should play my completely free modeled version instead!”

Occasionally. Since I don’t have any really popular games, but I still get enough weekly visitors that I sometimes find feedback or questions in the comments, rarely any actual spam. It’d help to be notified when I receive a comment so I can respond if I need too in a timely manner, but it’s not a big deal.

On any popular assets or places I find the comments completely useless, off topic and full of spam.

Edit: Your summary sounds about right.

Long story short, comments are broken. Remove comments and replace thumbs up with 5 stars. You need to have used to model, taken the decal, own the clothing, or have played the place to rate. You then have the option to explain the reason for your rating.

This is somewhat the idea of the review system idea I brought up, but I would not mind having comments up in background.

5-star ratings are obsolete, the only values that are picked significantly over others are 1 and 5, hardly anyone ever uses 2, 3 or 4.

YouTube disabled 5-star ratings for this reason.

The problem with comments is they’re listed by most recent, not most useful. Simply adding a rating system can fix comments for the better.

Point systems always work wonders. each users can upvote and so on.

Want to earn 9999999999999 robux? Just give a like on this comment and private message me, then I will tell you the secret.

I used to like reading the comments of my games to see how players generally felt about them and what new features they’d like to see.
However, I’ve had to disable my comments because of the huge amounts of phishing/spam. I won’t leave them open at the risk of players getting their accounts stolen. There needs to be better spam filters in place.

For paid products especially, comments are valuable to verify a game’s legitimacy before making a purchase, and there should definitely be more emphasis on placing high-quality comments at the top.

This is actually an interesting idea I came across on the forums:

I mean, there’s virtually no reason for someone to be copy and pasting something into the comments unless it’s spam - they should be typing in original text to express their opinion. I feel like this would help cut down on a lot of spam.
Maybe even add a little reminder along the lines of “If you are being told to copy and paste a message into the comments, it is a scam that doesn’t work” if someone tries to paste something.

I could see this idea taking the bulk of the spam out. In my opinion, something like that coupled with a rating system would improve the comments section tremendously.

That’s a pretty good idea if it’s something you can just do without writing something new. Make it so you can’t paste text in the comment textbox.
