I wanted to let you know we are aware Comments have problems with spam and being off topic. We don’t like it either. This thread is similar but takes the suggestion in another direction. We’re thinking about these and other ideas for improving Comments. I’ll keep you posted as we get farther along.
Pop quiz!
How many Comments are posted per day on ROBLOX, on average?
a. 45,000
b. 15,000
c. 75,000
d. 5,000
e. 95,000
By quantity, what percentage of Comments are posted on Places vs. posted on Items?
a. 10% Places / 90% Items
b. 25% Places / 75% Items
c. 50% Places / 50% Items
d. 75% Places / 25% Items
e. 90% Places / 10% Items
I don’t like that approach because, for a lot of the games I work on, the comments are an up to date “live feed” of the community responding to each other/ pointing out things they don’t like/ arguments.
The purpose of comments is completely fine as is, it’s literally just an issue of poor infrastructure. No proper “reply” system, along with no way to delete/ get rid of spam. Thus spam takes up a majority of comments and that’s literally all we see.
I still think games need a review system instead of the comments, we could always discuss how reporting, and options on them work. I mean, it would be nicer too limit people too a single review, that they can edit, with options of Recommend or Not Recommend. Then other users can upvote/downvote the reviews. Then make it against the rules too use reviews as spam, like “FREE ROBUX” etc.
Of course, the audience of Roblox is different from Steam, but if it’s designed right, it could be beneficial.
I would personally rather detailed reviews about downsides/upsides of my games then just spam on comments. Even reviews that are not super greatly written can be helpful. As long as it’s clear that it’s a Review system, and spam on them isn’t tolerated, it could be done.
Clearly, the comments on catalog items topping at an amazing speed. You can see ROBLOX assets being commented on every single second! Place comments only happens every hour, day, week, month or so.
As for 75,000 comments per day - I really don’t know. In this situation I simply try sort out the most likely answer. My 2nd guess in this case is e) 95,000
How many Comments are posted per day on ROBLOX, on average?

Any solution that requires voting, rating, or reporting needs to consider volume as a factor. For example, if the comments are coming in really fast there may not be enough ratings on each one to matter. And Aurarus’ example is valid if we went in the YouTube ratings direction. I’m not saying these ideas are off the table, but we have to consider the possible outcomes.
By quantity, what percentage of Comments are posted on Places vs. posted on Items?
c. 50% Places / 50% Items
This one was a bit of a trick question. The quantities are evenly split between Places and Items. However, Items get a much higher percentage of spam and comments are concentrated mostly on new hats, so it seems like there are more of them.
We have considered it. However, we are still getting some value out of what’s being said there. We wouldn’t just turn them off without providing another method for legitimate feedback and discussion.
Have you guys considered turning off comments for ROBLOX-made assets (hats/gear/etc)? They seem to be only used by spammers.
That’s how I find and squash bugs with gear sometimes :P.
Here is a suggestion:
Make it so if a comment has all of the following, make it unable to post:
Send, Me, Trades
This will stop some, but it wont be all.
And of course, someone will find a way around the system, as usual.
If we could somehow increase a ROBLOXians’ learning curve, most of the stupid “post this on 5 places and get free robux11!” will stop. And tbh, (guessing) that spam is the most common spam and also the most easily spread.
