Here’s the skinny: right click to select wasn’t always there, and before it was, you could right click on a part where you wanted the part to show up, click insert part, and the part would appear where you clicked.
Now, with Right-Click-To-Select, you can’t insert any part on top of any other part because Right-Click-To-Select selects the part, so you don’t get that option because you can’t insert parts into other parts.
Consider this:
Open up the baseplate place in studio
Turn the Locked property of the baseplate off
Right click to insert a part on top of the unlocked baseplate
That doesn’t work.
Right click on the skybox and insert a part
Chase down where the heck the part got to for 5 minutes because it’s 10,000 studs away
Drag the part all the way back onto the baseplate
Now you’ve wasted 10 minutes on a 1-second task
EDIT: Right-Click-To-Select also never turns off, and it is interfering HEAVILY with CmdUtl.
I’ve just got to say, this is FUCKING PISSING ME OFF!
These options are USELESS with multiple objects selected now that this “”"“feature”""" is added:
(that’s the 3D jump list, by the way)
You ALSO lose all your selection if you right click ANYWHERE. Right click on the locked baseplate? The 10 parts you’ve selected to union together are de-selected. Right click on the skybox? The 20 parts you’ve selected to duplicate are de-selected.
Why is right-clicking to select a thing? I can’t really think of many times I’ve wanted to click on a part/model and bring up the context menu in one click rather than two. It feels counter-intuitive to make right-clicking another way to select objects.
> Wants to insert part into workspace in front of camera > Surrounded by unlocked parts > RMB with no selection to insert part into workspace > Selection changes and I can’t insert part into workspace
If users want to act on a part they’ll select the part themselves – Studio shouldn’t try to predict what users want to do. There are a million UX designers tearing their hair out right now.
So, I noticed that inserting parts onto other parts was fixed, but this is still an issue. It’s extremely aggravating and puts the developers in a negative light. Where was the community interaction before this feature was pushed? How do I disable it in options? Why isn’t there an FFlag for it? This is seriously ruining my ROBLOX experience, and I urge you to consider getting feedback from studio power users before making interface changes like this.
Making hacky fixes for the use cases above isn’t what needs to happen. What does need to happen is right mouse needs to not select at all. If I want to select a part, I will use the damned left button, alright?
TBF it’s not something that should continue existing in Studio. If someone wants to act on parts they’ll select the parts themselves – nothing good comes of Studio trying (and especially failing) to predict what the user wants to do.
Update: If you right click on an object that has been selected with the default ROBLOX selection tool, it will work fine. But if you’re using a plugin selection tool ala CmdUtl, you’ll get the behavior in the pictures. I only use CmdUtl, so I don’t know how long the patch has been in place
Please make a way to turn this thing off, it’s ruining my experience!
