Explanation
To protect users privacy and to abide by the guidelines, I will try to be as vague as possible, while still outlining my point.
A while ago, a user posted a building portfolio. I went through his portfolio and he seemed legitimate, no red flags. I contacted him to create several assets for me, and he was friendly enough and agreed to create some assets if I provided payment first. I was alright with that, so I told him to stand by while I asked my partners if they thought it was alright since it was partly their money.
While waiting for their responses, I went through his portfolio again and noticed a flagged comment. In it a user stated that they were the ones that owned the assets and that the user stole them from him to use on his portfolio. He provided several links and screenshots as evidence. That comment, which was not attacking anyone, rather just pointing out some embarrassing facts, was flagged (I clicked to view it), and the “scammers” portfolio was not. It was the only indicator that the person was in fact, not legitimate. I do not like to think what might have happened if I did not look at his comment, or if the user chose to abide by the guidelines and not call him out for stealing. I would like to point out however, that about a day later the user’s portfolio was taken down. But, it still would have been too late for me if that user did not submit that comment providing proof.
So what’s the problem? The “scammer” was taken down after all.
I acknowledge that real people, not bots, moderate this forum and that a handful of people can only do so much, so quickly. My point is, people’s comments that politely and patiently inform people of a potential issue, while providing substantial evidence, should not be removed. I do not know how many other people were cheated by this user, or how many, like myself, almost lost quite a bit of money. I know Roblox is trying to keep this a friendly place, but preventing people from warning others about stealing before it’s too late should not fall under “attacking.” Roblox needs to take into consideration the lesser of two evils. Either prevent a scammer’s feelings from getting hurt, or prevent people getting cheated out of their hard earned money. What that user that warned me did was technically against the rules, but it should not be. Until Roblox can find out a way to quickly and efficiently remove illegitimate portfolios, we have nothing but reviews to depend on if a person will provide us real service or not. Roblox should not be able to take this away from us.
So what’s your solution?
Just like many other sites where freelancers can advertise their work, people’s reviews, even negative, should be counted as legitimate contributions to people’s portfolios and posts. The dev forum is not a place for young people to just hang out and have fun, it’s a place where people of all ages create entire substantial businesses, and reviews, are a huge part of that.
