Could someone please give me a quick list of pros and cons about having badges?
You’re polling if RBXDev should get a special badge, and only asking RBXDev members? Silly poll.
Back on topic,
I just don’t see a reason to add badges besides “i want to show off”. I don’t think an RBXDev badge will stop the issue of tricking kids. It’s one of thousands of ways someone can trick people over the internet.
If they trust someone just because they are on a special forum anyway thats their fault. We 100% DON’T need badges. We aren’t here to show how much better we are than others, we are here to discuss development with other “mature” (although not always as time has shown) developers. Thats it, we already get special powers like access to features early, and other early access to things. We don’t need some pretty badge on the website, im completely against this and ruins the idea of this group.
Edit: There are a lot of amazing and aspiring developers that should be in this group, adding a badge will just make them feel segregated if they don’t already.
Edit 2: Being in RBXDev should not be a sign of authority AT ALL, the fact that users believe that RBXDev members are users of authority is the issue we should be really be talking about.
Then maybe someone could create a topic on the roblox forums asking the regular users about this? Maybe in game design?
“Earn a badge so that you can have proof you’re in an exclusive club with no actual power over any other users!”
Imagine how easy it would be to harass people with this badge if an actual member felt like doing it?
This whole idea may not even have one “pro” to it.
I think the issue here is that this is not a democracy and these polls are not binding.
Giving users the option to vote and then going against the popular choice never ends well.
If we made a poll to give everyone 10,000R$, of course people would vote in favor of it. But doing so is not in the best interest of ROBLOX.
We seem to be able to make the right decision though looking at the poll
EDIT: nvm >.>
I made the entry way back in 2012 when I first joined. So of course it wasn’t that good.
badge = more users will want to join RBXDev, which means more people, which means the forums become active again :3
Which means a lower signal-noise ratio. We only have so much communication bandwidth per engineer.
i’m not saying allow everyone who wants to join – i’m not asking for more lax RBXDev requirements
if someone deserves to be here, they deserve to be here, regardless of how many people are already in RBXDev
i’m just saying a badge could cause more “worthy” (for lack of a better word) people to want to join
It all depends on how many join, really. Noise is going to happen no matter how worthy someone is, unfortunately. We’re all guilty of it, just look at @Nexx
I think an RBXdev badge is a really good idea. Considering there’s so many rip-off RBXdev groups and many people I’ve met to claim to be apart of it, I think it would be a good way to have proof of valid membership/
Whilst I can see the addition of a badge having arguments on both sides, I certainly feel there does need to be something to illustrate us as members. I imagine this isn’t the first time something such as this has occurred and I do agree something should be done about it, I’m just not sure as to what.
A badge seems like a good and creative idea however it does, as people have previously mentioned, create more interest in RBXDev. Now, you could argue this both ways but that’s not something I really want to delve into right now.
Edit: Typo
that shade tho
I’m entirely for having a badge, provided it is explicitly stated somewhere that RbxDev members have no special say in moderation or anything of the sort. I say this due to the ‘Official Model Maker’ badge. The concern of the badge being a symbol of status could be applied to that badge as well.
It’s a status symbol
It’s also a tool
Im cool with getting a badge
Im cool with not getting a badge
But to say that we’re not in any sort of a selective secret community of many talented and well known people from all sorts of walks and strides, that many people strive to be in, is like walking backwards blindfolded into the river.
Regardless of whether or not a devforum badge is created, people who trick others into believing they can ban them from ROBLOX/the devforums/etc (even real forum members) should have their accounts moderated like they would if they were impersonating a ROBLOX staff member. Not because being a forum member is high and mighty (shouldn’t be banned or anything for claiming to be a real member) but claiming they can ban someone on the site is exactly the kind of thing that would get someone banned as “impersonating the ROBLOX staff”.
That’s only when it’s over the normal site though. Nothing could really be done in this case since it was over Skype.
In response to whether or not RBXDev is a status symbol, ROBLOX has already made it so: Opened Delightful Gift of the Developer - Roblox
In response to whether or not RBXDev users should have a badge, however, I really don’t have much of a strong opinion either way. I’d just say let ROBLOX handle it.
Instead of a badge, why not just do a plain old text label in grey on the profile that says something like “Developers-Forum Member” (The reason for the spelling is to avoid the acronym RBXDev, as people think that acronym means you have power or are a dev of Roblox or something)
