Sunsetting User-to-User Inbox Messaging

my message wont change the decision of giant company, but it seems stupid that you can’t handle maintaining such a feature like this

Fun Fact: Roblox Games used to have Comment Sections underneath which was used for feedback aswell!

I wholly agree with this! Roblox has had an unfortunate track records in recent years/updates of sunsetting valuable features without a sustainable replacement for it.

The platform’s horrendous auto-chat filter hardly even allows you to communicate with another friend, co-developers, etc. about ways to contact you on other platforms. Personally, I do not believe that solely relying on in-game chats or Groups… excuse me, Communities, to convey communications is the most effective transition.

Oh they do, they definitely have problems with a discord tag or even things as youtube, tik tok or instagram usernames in your profile description

This could be a good idea, considering that we’ve never had such a feature for as long as Roblox had existed as a platform.

I 100% support this change, Roblox inbox messages are just useless for todays standards. And for developers especially, it was HORRIBLE for getting any feedback about your game when there are better alternatives such as Roblox Group Wall (which will be replaced with forums), Guilded/Discord servers and my favorite being Form Embedder.

If youre complaining that Roblox isnt giving you a “replacement”, just use Form Embedder, it doesnt need Discord/Guilded webhooks or anything. Only Google Forms.

you’re removing them because you didn’t update them??? more people would use them if you actually did just update it a bit.

so, instead of fixing something, just remove the feature entirely. great choice.

Yes but I use it for speaking to friends on Roblox.

This post itself is honestly pathetic, there are either better alternatives to these removed features now or had good reason to be removed.

Forums are returning on Roblox Communities soon (aka Roblox Groups).

To be honest, besides the fact that the death sound was so iconic. its not really big of a deal.

Sound effects can be uploaded publicly, while music requires you to use Distrokid or Clippsly. And even then, you can upload any audio for free for private use.

Team Create replaced that feature, and its honestly so much better. Also Building games and Private servers exist.

To be fair, most of old Roblox events that arent beloved like the Egg Hunt 2018 (Although I perfer the dev hunts) are pretty bad. Plus these new “platform events” actually give a lot of games exposure.

Also developers are making free UGC events.

You have a good point though.

Leaderboards and Clans are honestly useless features that no one really cared for.
Plus even after this, it didnt really made groups “more redundant”. Groups are still used for making games, making clothing, making communities and etc.

To be fair, Removing Tix did help Roblox and Developers more money, however they also released more free items and developers hosting free ugc items for players to collect.

Im not sure if you watched the RDC 2024 event but uhh… Parties are coming back and are better this time.

“About me” exists, completely useless having two text boxes for writing infomation.

It was originally on the home page and later moved to its own page.
The feed was only used for statuses.
Nowadays you can just turn on notifications on group announcements and game updates.

To be fair, the reason why gears are no longer mentained is because developers didnt want to allow players using gears that break their games. Plus nowadays they either download the gears they want to use or just make their own.

And for the messaging tab, there are better alternatives such as the Roblox chat, Roblox Group Wall (soon to be forums), Discord/Guilded servers and in game feedback using Google Forms (aka Form Embedder) or Discord/Guilded webhook system.

In the end, there are good reasons and alternatives for these “”“broken”“” features that were removed.

This might shock you but, Roblox chat exists.

I know it exists but the chat has a terrible character limit, can’t message non-friend’s with it and also is super tiny. It’s objectively worst.

I mean… you could always just use Guilded or any other service. And also the roblox chat is bigger on the app than the website.

Yes, but I want to use ROBLOX since this is the ROBLOX platform.

Messages is a basic feature that has been around since we joined the platform.
It’s basically the email of Roblox.
You would think that Roblox would encourage using their platform for messages so they can moderate it easier.
It’s mot the end of the world to lose this basic feature, but it also is nonsensical to get rid of it.

Give us a real update Roblox, give us emission maps.

i think you gave like one reason to why these features were removed
most of the things you said were just “its coming back!”
there isnt really any reason to remove all of those features, and just like he said, they were all removed because roblox didn’t want to fix them.

Lets review this objectively, yes?

A sound that has spread to notable popularity over fifteen years and was the subject of a settlement. If that isn’t a big deal to you, there’s no point in further discussing this.

It’s been over seven years since the removal of Public Forums. Why can’t the deletion of a feature immediately be substituted by a replacement? Regarding Roblox Communities, from the video, it doesn’t look like the feature resembles much of the forums that used to be. To call communities a replacement for the old forums is dubious at best.

So? Public audio is much better than Distrokid and Clippsly’s selection of available audio. Undeniably the former allows for much more freedom as to what audio the user wants to play than currently. In the eyes of the copyright holder of the audio, the update sucks too as agreeing to Distrokids’ terms of use only generates exposure not revenue.

Collaborative building within Studio doesn’t compare to collaborative building in Experiences. Large Personal Build Sever communities found themselves stranded without a comparable Roblox substitution- creating one of your own proved to be greatly difficult as a custom voxel system just is. To my knowledge, only the user goos_honk managed to make a professional substitution.

Which is subjective, I for one enjoyed a great many of them.

Source?

It fulfilled a niche so were they useless? The Clans & Guilds subforum, which made extensive usage of the feature amassed nearly 25 million posts throughout its lifetime. To say people didn’t care for it is wrong.

subjective, it isn’t live yet.

I’m noticing a pattern here. Whenever a feature only supports a certain niche instead of a large one; you find it “useless”. About me and Status updates are different, the difference being in the respective naming. Moreover, Status updates play a large role on large platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

I’ll concede that much of the death of gears was brought about by the player and developer base, not entirely on the part of Roblox. Please do recognise that the quality of Gears and the Messaging tab wasn’t enhanced throughout their existence due to Roblox’s distinct lack of updates. It wouldn’t be as “”“broken”“” if the features were maintained adequately.

ive only ever received like 3 spam messages post-2018 so this just seems like a pointless removal because there cant be that much spam

The reasons are very valid, though it would make sense to finalize a replacement first.

I refuse to make a guilded account so this would be the end of being able to be contacted by anyone having issues with stuff i’ve made

Those scammers are probably gonna spam as much as they can in these three weeks (I actually hope not).

If the feature does gets sunsetted without an immediate replacement, this will almost force us to use Discord or Guilded for communication purposes. This will also mean that the people under the age of 13 (which is a good amount of your users) won’t be able to directly contact us for suggestions or bug reports regarding our experiences.

This would mean that they only have 2 other options:

  • They can either message us on our group walls (where it isn’t certain that we see their message) or

  • They will need to get their parent/guardian to use one of the two chat applications in order to contact us on their behalf (which might not happen giving the notoriety that third party chat applications seem to have with safety).

Speaking of safety, the ability to message anyone can totally pose safety risks if you are not careful (it should be common sense by now) but the inbox messaging system also became unsafe because you let it become so. You make it seem like sunsetting the feature isn’t a choice but more of a consequence from the negligence that it has received over the years…

and how do you think this will minimize spam messages and scams? It would still be simple enough for an anonymous scammer to use a botting program to send out a massive amount of friend requests and it would be just as easy for an unsuspecting victim to friend the anonymous scammer. There are already people that spam group ally requests with a botting program to other group owners and it wouldn’t be much different to do the same thing but with friend requests.

To me, this looks like a completely stupid thought process. It’s like asking a person that wants to “help you out” if they will grief the project that you already spent hours working on only for the person to completely lie to you and destroy the hard work that you put into the project. You are just hoping that your userbase doesn’t randomly friend scammers that want to compromise their accounts. Some of your users don’t know any better and are 5 year olds on their family tablets that don’t know what a scam is and trust anyone they interact with.

Within those five years, you never really made any new features to the system and you just maintained it for the sake of it remaining functional to a certain degree. It was mostly hidden behind a collapsible menu which made the feature seem like it was almost nonexistent (unless you went onto a player profile). This probably made the usage of the system extremely low and you could of easily encouraged people to use it by adding new features to it.

Do I need to explain this again? Speaking of spam…

The Forums? Where have I heard that name before? Oh right.

There used to be the public forums which got removed in 2017 because they couldn’t keep them up to date and moderate them properly. Because of this, it would get spammed and raided on multiple occasions which would ultimately be the final nail in the coffin.

I am predicting that these new “Forums” could also get horribly spammed and the death of a second forum feature could happen in the next few years.

Roblox, please reconsider this change or rethink some of the things you are saying to us regarding the removal of the inbox messaging system. Please think of sunsetting this important feature after you release a replacement for it instead of removing it and making us wait for who knows how long for the replacement to eventually be released.
