By “experience” do you mean they have to be in the same server or can it be any two servers inside the experience?
If the API is called GetFriendsOnline
, now maybe Friends won’t be changed to the more corporate name of Connections
!
Comply with the law:
Rename friends to a stupid nickname that will do nothing but cause confusion:
Oh, ROBLOX!
Can be on different servers within the same experience.
To be honest, I love this update. But maybe I feel it’s unnecessary to change the name to connections.
I can’t wait to send connection requests to people and people having no idea what a “connection request” means.
Connections? Seriously?
Who makes these decisions, this is the most corny stuff I have EVER seen
“Hey man, want to be connections on roblox so we can play experiences made on create?”
Does this sound natural to you? Out of touch much?
You guys are so out of touch with the users, investors and the gaming industry. Renaming “Friends” to “Connections”… really?..
Replies are odd. I don’t really care about rebranding certain features, people throw a fuss about everything. Like, I get it, does sound a hell of a lot like Linkedin or the like, but does it matter? Is it even related to this post?
Anyways, I’m always happy to hear more steps to increase privacy, especially to those <13. Super happy to hear an “appear offline” toggle in the works as well. Thumbs up.
LMAO YOU GUYS ARE REBRANDING FRIENDS TO CONNECTIONS??? Oh my days this is so hilariously stupid
Can’t wait to send “Connection requests” and ask “hey buddy you wanna be my connection?” LOOOOOOL
This small change REEKS of trying to evade and keep breaking the law, oh my god dude. Have you guys genuinely messed up this badly with officials? I would be kind, but I just can’t if you guys keep making stupid decisions like this that make the platform feel soulless.
The new GetFriendsOnline stuff is the ONLY redeeming factor of this. If you change Friends to Connections then I hope and pray that that change is seen for what it really is, that being evading the law and trying to confuse investors and outsiders.
Just a few weeks ago I made a custom “invite friends” menu that relies on GetFriendsOnline
to prioritize online friends vs. offline friends… guess I can’t do that anymore!
I totally get why this change is being made. More privacy settings are always welcome. Just kind of annoying because this will make it harder to create custom invite screens. I wanted to make my own invite screen (using ExperienceInviteOptions to prompt individual friends) because I didn’t like Roblox’s default PromptGameInvite
menu which I can’t seamlessly integrate into my UI.
Also, @ replies above, this change is completely unrelated to the supposed rebranding of “friends” to “connections”.
This is good, i like that roblox is getting into this direction, may see insignificant but its impacting
blah blah blah obligatory “please don’t rename it connections” text wall. LOVING THIS CHANGE! even if i won’t use it, everyone’s been asking to hide their online status for years; and this is gonna pave the way to even greater settings (disable auto-joining friends, pretty please!)
I honestly think you’re adding “privacy” features that only 3 people are using. Unless all of them are forced because of laws, (which, if so, then I respect Roblox and kind of disrespect the people making the laws) then why? I wouldn’t really care, but it definitely restricts developer freedom and annoyingly gets in the way. Especially when there are so many methods that developers (might not know about and) have to check for just to make a simple social system. This was most prominent in migrating to TextChatService for me.
These are just some of my initial thoughts.
I’m certain a lot more people than you believe will actually be using this feature. I for one certainly will be because I’d rather that only people who actually know me are able to see if I am even online or not.
Someone being able to know if you are online or even simply just in a game in general could be used to harass them if that person knows what games you usually play. And it’s not hard to figure out what server of that game you are in if the game doesn’t utilize multiple places or reserved servers.
What use cases would a developer even have for knowing this information aside from prompting game invites? I don’t really see any use cases for this aside from cases that would be better resolved with a first-party Roblox feature for them.
Hm, that’s a good point, but being able to know at least online and in game statuses (not specifically what game) is a big enough feature needed to beat out the rare occurrences for be harassed for playing a certain game. If they know what games you typically play, they’re probably getting that information (and probably status information) elsewhere. (the block feature exists + you’re waaay more likely to be harassed for something much different and obvious, like an avatar)
Inviting people is a key component to organic game growth. Plus roblox themselves have said that sessions with friends are like over 1.5x longer. I was going to say there are some other (particularly chat-related) privacy methods that are annoying to check for when implementing some systems but I can’t really think of any.
Perhaps I am wrong about how many people might use this. I just can’t think of anybody in my life that really would use it.
If the block feature alone was enough then it probably wouldn’t warrant these kinds of privacy options but the sad reality is that it’s very easy for the harasser to just… create new accounts to continue their actions.
They certainly would have gotten it from elsewhere, just the idea that someone who already knows these games can scan their server lists to stalk the server you are in if they know you’re playing a game is reason enough to me to warrant being able to hide online status like this.
Roblox considered the server list a big enough issue that they had even temporarily disabled the server list showing player avatars on games that were participating in The Hunt. Sad that they didn’t just remove the player avatars entirely at that point for all games.
I do love the privacy changes that are coming. It’s always a good thing for players to have more privacy options, especially for children. Huge W right there.
But… Come on. Connections? Seriously?
Surely you guys see just how idiotic and out-of-touch you look by renaming friends to “connections”, right? Surely you guys recognize just how against changing friends to “connections” we are, right?
How can a company be this out of touch? It feels like YouTube are better than you guys.
Whatever suits are charge of these things, CUT. IT. OUT. We don’t want these dumb changes, stop wasting your time and resources on this. Redirect all that money and effort to useful stuff like improving moderation, improving the engine, improving the website, community outreach, getting back in touch with your developers and players, etc etc etc etc etc.
I wanna inform Roblox, that Roblox is an platform for playing video games. Its an entertainment. Its not LinkedId workplace environment where you call “Friends” “connections”. Im bit tired of this rule of out of touch shareholders on this platform.
And then Roblox needs to secretly complain that their business model is in negative numbers. No wonder if they spending millions on useless “AI tech” and billions on acquiring companies that ends up being useless features. I wish Roblox stopped spending money on illusion of expansion and rather focused on stability instead.
