[Update] Changes to Asset Privacy for Audio

Hey developers,

We’ve just released the new Audio Asset Privacy system which allows you to view and grant permissions for specific Experiences to use your assets. You can access this feature from the Configure Item page of any audio asset! Just note that you must first publish the Experience in order to grant it permissions.

Will the audio discovery plugin be updated to reflect the changes this system will make?

Additionally, utilizing this system one audio at a time would take ages for games that use many audios. Could there be a way to change settings for multiple audios at once?

All the audios I have in my game that I didn’t upload are all under 6 seconds, so I’m good. I was honestly stunned to see that all 49 of my audios were still good to go.

I strongly appreciate Roblox following up with this update. I understand the reasoning behind these changes, and I do apologize if I sounded a bit harsh on my replies in the previous topic.

Furthermore, I do have one suggestion for Roblox, and it’s regarding age verification: Please do not push ID verification so hard on developers. I know that a lot of developers are uncomfortable sharing their personal information, and there are some developers on here that do not have access to an ID.

In addition to that, the only thing ID verification tells us is whether a user is real or not. This works well when considering bot protection for audio uploads, but from a moderation stance, this doesn’t tell us anything about how trustworthy a user is. Roblox should switch to alternatives that are more accessible to developers, such as email and phone verification, and taking moderation history into consideration.

That being said, Roblox should not put too emphasis on ID verification, and that is my biggest concern with the audio upload system. Before I end this post, I just want to thank Roblox for their transparency over this update. Just please keep taking valuable feedback from developers and keep on creating the best metaverse in existence.

Incredibly harsh wording below as I’m venting a lot of frustration with the handling of this change in this post, but I promise that there is some semblance of reason underneath it.

Could not agree more. Rather than attempting to improve the copyright system in place or roll out any of the myriad of infinitely better ways this could be handled, Roblox seems to have panicked and is instead opting to obliterate half of the audio catalog and to force developers to go through all their games and replace or reupload hundreds of audios individually. While this isn’t much of a problem on the surface if games can just reupload their audios and remain almost unaffected, I’m far more concerned with how audio discovery will be impacted as I’ve put tons of work into sound design in the past, and the fact that the audio library is being flooded with untrimmed, low quality stock audio as we speak making it incredibly difficult to find player owned audio is not a vote of confidence as I’d much rather be able to filter out those audios as spam than actually use them in games, though there are a good few that would be very useful were they not obstructed by their pages upon pages of duplicate brethren.

Games with inactive developers will be permanently half silent and other games that do end up replacing their sounds will sound awkward and scuffed. Roblox has forced this burden onto their developers rather than trying to opt for a better solution though I am very grateful for the effort put into making it easier for developers on part of the team. However, it just isn’t enough in all honesty.

These changes, while appreciated, don’t really soften the blow. Developers are still being forced to reupload or replace the audio from every single game they have ever made individually. Games with inactive developers are still going to be awkwardly half silent likely forever and many old, nostalgic legacy games will lose their magic permanently. There is absolutely no way a small team can whitelist any substantial number of potentially millions of different sound effects to save any substantial number of games even though the effort is highly appreciated. The stock audio being uploaded is awful and floods pages upon pages of the library with uncut and low quality audio that does not flow well in games at all. This seems much more geared towards specifically easing developer relations by doing the bare minimum but that might just be the cynic in me. Regardless, anyone acting as if all has been resolved has not truly considered the situation as a whole. This could be handled in a far, far better way.

To add, I do not understand why this change is deemed “necessary” in any capacity. Everybody is just going to reupload literally all the audio and music they have already been using themselves, which is good as it makes this update infinitely less agonizing than it would be otherwise. However, what I don’t understand is if everybody will just be reuploading everything anyways, what was the purpose of this change whatsoever? Why break half of the audio of every game on the entire platform for this? What’s the point? Why not just enforce this on newly-uploaded audios and not preexisting ones so you have a fixed amount of audio to weed out the unlicensed audio from, still being able to solve the issue of copyright but at the same time not partially breaking the audio of every game on the entire platform? I don’t understand why things can’t be settled better in any capacity regardless of a lawsuit, though I’m obviously no lawyer whatsoever so take this with a grain of salt.

The reason I might appear to be blowing the situation out of proportion a little bit as I do acknowledge that (thank god) most sound effects are still going to be available just fine and all self-uploaded audio is (also thank god) also going to be completely fine is that I’ve put tons upon tons of work into sound design in my games and it just doesn’t sit right with me to have to mess with it in this way for what is seemingly a very poorly justified change. It also doesn’t sit well with me that games with legacy music from the early days of the platform will lose their magic perhaps forever as those songs hold such a ridiculously large place in my heart for their charm and my time with them.

Can you please verify if we will be able to allow group-uploaded audio files to be used in other, non-group experiences?

I wouldn’t discount these efforts, if they have the tools, they could use file access frequency data to identify highly requested vs. unused ‘legacy’ sfx and then target the ones needed the most.

Just want to add - This would be really helpful, because my group would rather not have one account being responsible for all of the sound effects. It makes it very difficult to test things locally without publishing the experience, not to mention we’d need to make a test experience specifically to use those sounds.

Definitely crammed that one with too many "absolutely"s. You do make a good point actually and I guess it was a little short-sighted of me to be so dismissive of it.

I just feel personally that the audios I specifically like to use in games aren’t going to be part of that group as I had a habit of going to “the depths” of the library to find sound effects that fit my needs.

If audios are becoming private, then they might as well just remove everything like free models, clothing, etc; there are always gonna be things that go against Roblox’s ToS and if this is what they’re gonna do then they should just remove everything. Humanity is regressing instead of progressing. :roll_eyes:

Why do you think this is necessary? Nobody asked for this and it isn’t gonna help nobody. Beginner developers most likely do not know how to make music so they will resort to the audio libary. Good roblox music is difficult to find since the search engine is garbage. And why would somebody want happy music when a disaster in-game is happening? And besides I am very mad at this update and think it’s a waste of time. And this also is gonna make some of my games mostly boring and it’s difficult to actually find good audio uploaded by roblox. And if the update isn’t reverted, I will most likely take a 2 week break from roblox. People aren’t happy with this change, roblox. Just go back to taking down audios that are copyright claimed. :confused:

In the future, are we going to get a way to easily set the permissions for audios on mass? Right now I plan to do this for my projects using a script that utilizes site APIs, but that isn’t very ideal as of now.

Not a fan of the fact that any audio set as ‘All Experiences’ is locked at that setting, if this update is truly about protecting creator’s IP, shouldn’t it not get locked to this.

How are you able to select “All Experiences” in the first place? Did you use Inspect Element to see what would happen?

Audios uploaded before audios were free that are below 5 seconds have this option turned on.

I believe the options are just disabled until the 22nd.

when it throws this error does that mean it already has permission or is it an outright failure

I’ve got like 750 unique sounds in this place but only about 150 needed permissions

These permissions are new, so I don’t know if its working yet or not, but, I think for new sounds you should get the choice and the reason it must be locked at ‘all experiences’ if that selection is ever chosen is because once you set it, people can start using it and if they link to it, it has to keep working, so you can’t subsequently change it or you’ll break references to it.

I haven’t uploaded any since they put that out.
