That is an amazing change!
Before this, the process to get the Member role was almost impossible.
I would think it will be much better if we’ll be more aware of the criterias.

Glad to see that the the growing devforum is getting more automation.
I understand that it would be unwise to post in exact details how one would gain full membership but I have a couple questions:
How active does one have to be? Is it like one post or reply for a week for a month or ten for example?
Does the automation algorithm run periodically or does it trigger immediately after a user hits the specific criteria?
This is a great change, it’s reassuring to know that theres a system now.
Not based on needing to put in a certain amount of time every day or anything like that, feel free to take breaks. It just means it’ll take you longer, but it doesn’t set you back disproportionally.
I’m pretty sure you should get it within 24 hours of hitting the requirements once you do.
I have read the entire post. The thing i was talking about is more work for moderators (due to people attempting to be “smart” and ignore the warnings to not attempt to spam as it doesn’t count). But on second thought it is and remains their job to moderate the forums.
It is actually super easy for moderators to address flags, so you don’t have to worry about that. Discourse makes this super easy. A moderator can address a couple hundred of flags per hour if it’s all simple infractions.
Thanks for the response. I’m glad that the new process for gaining full membership seems to be well thought out. Additionally I think this change might make the community more active.
I’d say this was a much needed change, given the influx of new members going in, I was waiting for this change for quite a while.
I’m kinda confused on some aspects of it, especially on the moderation part (I might have gotten a minor strike for a OT post at some point but that was maybe 7 months ago)
By “removed” do you mean unlisted? Or is there a complete removal without any trace on the forum that I’d never heard of?
I like this new process and I am glad you guys were able to explain clearly how to rank up in the Forums.
(Especially since I got my New Member Rank, yesterday!)
Can’t wait explore the forums even more and share my opinion.
Removed – when a post is flagged it is later reviewed by a moderator, who can choose to disagree with the flag(s) (= restore the post) or agree with the flag (= removes the post, sends feedback to poster, and puts it on their record).
A thread getting unlisted in itself is not going to add to your forum history, a moderator has to actually agree to a flag. (but they may in addition to agreeing to a flag also unlist the thread, of course)
I guess it explains everything atm…
I’ve seen a few posts that are unlisted with an added reason, but they just linger there. Would that mean it goes against the poster? Is there a difference between having your post unlisted vs having your post removed?
That means a moderator hasn’t reviewed it yet. Posts get auto-hidden after several flags, but that doesn’t do anything to the post apart from hiding it until a moderator comes and agrees/disagrees on the flags.
EDIT: If you have more detailed questions about how Discourse moderation works please ask me in private, this is getting a bit off-topic
Awesome, it’s nice to see that people with the “new member” level can be promoted to member a bit easier.
I was always unsure really how one was able to get the member level.
Moving forward I hope things can continue to get better and better
I think this is great for new members. I know I would have appreciated this process back when I was one, but I did feel warm and fuzzy knowing actual people approved of me becoming a full member.
One thing has me concerned though:
Please don’t automate this. Top Contributors are awesome individuals who have tons of knowledge and are honestly some of the best assets to the devforums. Automating the Top Contributors role is like giving a moderator role away for free, and I’m not sure any automation can guarantee good results.
Top Contributors currently have no moderator powers or duties. Lead Top Contributors will not be automated with that change.
Additionally, nobody will be automatically added to the post approval team.
That’s a relief. For some reason, I thought they could move threads and stuff. Maybe I’m getting that confused. I’m looking forward to more improvements to the dev forums soon!
Well, I guess the original guide that was constructed about this needs to link here.
I like the new streamlined process, but am curious if moderation will still be manual on the devforum. It doesn’t seem very fitting to allow automation to determine who gets promoted and then have the same automation be the only system seeing if they are not abusing their role. Basically, what I’m asking is if there will still be checks and balances of manual reviewal for moderation on the devforum.
Thanks Developer Relations team for making this happened for Member role automation.
I hope I get Member role from automation or not. Since I don’t post much on DevForum which I’ve been busy in life.
I believe the Leader (trust level 3) role only have the power to move the thread, close thread, and edit topic.
