I’d like to buy an Oculus Rift, but I’m not sure if my parents would be pleased if I spent $600 on a virtual reality headset instead of saving for College.
I just hope the whole “Free Community College” idea that I keep hearing around gets phased in soon.
Maybeee… Get a small Arduino sensor, attach it to the interior of the device,
and when the user closes or opens his eye POSt the data to a document that your client reads from to detect his eye status.
Wouldn’t that be really slow, though?
That sounds like a poor idea because it requires a lot of set up, far more than having a rift or cardboard, and really slow.
For a third of the cost of a single semester of gender studies, you could get a leading competitor in the blooming field of virtual reality, and gain invaluable experience developing on it which will be useful knowledge to you for years to come.
Just buy the damn thing.
I’m waiting on the HTC Vive so I’m hoping by the time I get one, there will be support for it. I’m hopefully getting one close to release.
Saving up for college is a perfectly valid reason to hold on to your hard-earned cash… but you’re young and you should allow yourself to benefit from your succes by spending some of it. All my income goes 80% savings 20% spending.
and besides, how many young adults your age do you think have the chance to even wear one of these VR goggles, let alone develop games on them?!
I’m sticking with Google cardboard.
Does Arma have VR? If so, I definitely want to check that out.
If anyone wants to look through it and see how it works. @zeuxcg gave us a really nice, simple API for it.
My biggest problem about buying a VR device or developing for one is that it doesn’t seem practical - yet.
Yeah, it’s cool at first, but I don’t see myself using virtual reality on a daily basis. It’s kinda like a once and awhile thing.
Yeah, VR isn’t yet practical, but then again neither were a lot of things in the beginning. It takes some time to get that bar of entry down, and I think that bringing it to ROBLOX helps a lot; part of the challenge is having a platform to start with!
I do agree that the hardware is super expensive right now. A Rift is $600, and that’s not counting the rig you need to drive it. Technology has a way of getting cheap though.
Still looking for an answer for this.
Google Cardboard is basically just cardboard and plastic. It doesn’t really plug into anything. It’s the software on your phone that makes it work. ROBLOX really wouldn’t have any way that I know of to interface your phone from the desktop like that.
Looked up a random app and this might work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.loxai.trinus.test
Not tested but I can try it out when I get home from work. Looks promising.
The real issue is latency. You’ll definitely get sick if you try to do that.
All things considered, Cardboard really isn’t an ideal way to use VR, but it is the lowest bar of entry.
Can we expect cardboard support any time soon?
Yeah, doesn’t work with cardboard.
Is there some option I have to enabled?
What is the input method for cardboard? Is it a controller or keyboard or touch controls?
