Ways to Improve My Game High Seas?

All I did was see the “release from jail” cutscene and wound up there. I can’t even reproduce it.

Other bugs:
Occasionally I heal after battle, sometimes not.
The sword sometimes disappears.
I made a boat, it didn’t move from the coast when i hopped in, then it sank in a different location when I went back into build mode.

Game has a lot of potential! I will rebuild

Thank you so much for your feedback! I’ll be working on fixing all of these. Spawning under the map is definitely a bug.

This error is fixed. I have to filter every chat message for Roblox’s TOS, which is why that occurred.

A few other random things fixed. Also,

This badge has been added - any beta testers should receive it now. Please report any bugs that you find, thanks!

Your game seems like it has very big potential. I really like the rain effect on your screen. I love the models, and the animation and general atmosphere of the game. I presume that it is not complete, and will have updates to add content, and remake or redo some aspects.

One aspect I struggled with is not knowing what to do, or how to do something. In the very beginning it feels almost like a showcase. I still don’t fully know how to play, or what the objectives are. Perhaps adding an NPC of some sorts that guides you in the game would help out a bit. Otherwise, this seems like a really promising naval pirate game in the works!

A bug I found was that guards can end up killing other guards. Also, you should add a “reset save” feature. When I first joined the game, I accidentally left and didn’t see the cutscene, and when I rejoined I was unceremoniously put into some castle of some sort and had no idea what I was doing there.

That makes sense. I’ll be sure to not set the tutorial datastore before it is completed.

Yeah, that’s something I need to clarify in the game. I think I’ll be adding a quest feature because of this (gives the players some simple goals right off the bat).

First off, congrats on taking on such a big project and actually making a BETA version of the game. I played the game for a few minutes, I tried to play for more but I will be honest it became unplayable. Everything else listed in this forum is good but you need basics of the game to work before you attack the other problems.

  1. Simplicity

When a player joins your game, he needs to be able to understand the basics. The tutorial was nice, but not very helpful. To be honest, when I join I don’t really know what to do, where to go, and why I should go there.

  1. Spawn

After I accidentally robbed someone, I recieved the “Thief” role which I kept regardless of dying/rejoining. The next day I rejoined to give the game another try when another player joined and killed me while I was tabbed out of the game. This teleported me to another island where I had no clue what was going on. After reseting I respawned on the same island, and after a second reset I spawned on island on wooden stilts, stuck and unsure what to do, where to go.

  1. Boats

The boat building simple is a nice idea. However it needs an overhaul. There is no move button, so if you missclick you waste wood. after I built a small raft, it wouldn’t actually go where I wanted it to go. After spawning on the last location, I spawned a small boat which fell through the ground and disappeared, leaving me stranded with no wood.

  1. Other problems

Bounty doesn’t go away, guards permanently angry at me

In conclusion, nice concept. From what I understand you are solo developer, or your team is very small. Good job for the progress you made, not many solo/small teams get here. Your project just needs more work, and in my opinion better organization for the gameplay. Personally I would direct your attention to a NPC in the main island who would give you options of what to do. If you need some ideas, look at other games. What options do they give their players? Good luck.

Oooh, there was a tutorial!? When I went under the deck, I had to reset to get back out and there was no tutorial. I just went out and robbed people. Might want to preserve the tutorial based on the player, not the character? Just guessing here, based on the behavior I saw.

I went from Merchant to Thief, then from Thief to Pirate. Is there a way to get back to Merchant from Pirate?

The tutorial was very basic. You received a couple tools, were told too go dig up a treasure then fight a skeleton. It was a good start, just needed to be polished.

Thanks for you feedback! The main message I’m getting from everyone is to make it clear to the player what they are supposed to do. Clear gameplay = clear motivation to keep playing, am I correct?

Yeah, I removed that tutorial because players weren’t sticking through it. People don’t have much of an attention span, it seems.

You can sell off your bounty at the jail.

unfortunately they do, personally I would make the tutorial optional. First time players join to tutorial but have a skip tutorial prompt. And for those who want to go back a tutorial button so they can re-do tutorial.
